Brunch had been much better than Caius had expected, and he’d spent the rest of the morning happily dragging Andrew around town. Andrew was very accommodating, and Caius made a point to reward him for his patience when they met for dinner later that night.

It was two o’clock when he arrived home. Andrew had left for a hockey game, and Caius had called a taxi to help him schlep his bags and boxes to the house. Caius was amused by the driver’s surprise when he stated their destination. The man kept looking at him warily in the rearview mirror as he drove and continued to do so as he carried Caius’s packages to the front door. Caius waved cheerfully as the taxi drove away, but once he was alone, his smile faded.

Caius hated The Cut Sleeve. It was difficult not to when he’d been trapped inside it for over half a century. He would have loved to burn it to the ground and never look back, but after spending the day exploring, he’d realized that was not an option.

Caius had lived a long time. He’d always understood that, no matter what, the world was constantly changing. He'd changed along with it as the years went by, riding the waves of invention and innovation, bad fashion choices, and questionable artistic movements. Except this time, he hadn’t been a part of that growth. He’d been stuck in a glass jar, unable to affect the world or be affected by it.

So much of the town was the same, yet everything was different. The bank had been where he’d remembered it, but it was so much bigger than it used to be, with polished marble floors and technology on every surface. Computers had barely been more than a concept in the early 1950s. Now they ran everything.

Earlier in the day, he and Andrew had passed an electronics store, and he’d seen an array of televisions for sale in the window. They were so big, yet much flatter than he remembered. And the colors! Some of them were more vibrant than real life!

The thought of exploring all of these new inventions was exciting, but it was also jarring. Caius felt very out of place. Despite his dislike for the building that had been his prison for sixty years, it was the one place he was familiar with. Until he became accustomed to this new time, he couldn’t afford to let it go. It would have to be redone, of course, but that was part of the fun. He’d consider it practice in modernizing himself to fit his surroundings.

With that thought in mind, he unlocked the door and let himself inside. He was in the middle of moving his packages and shopping bags into the foyer when a shadow fell across the stoop.

“Ro—”

“Uh uh,” the Snake interrupted, holding up a hand. “I left that name behind long ago. You called me the Snake in your dreams. I find it fitting for you to continue to do so in the real world.
