CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The next morning, Lucas came in to break his fast late. Olivia gave him a look as sour as the taste in his mouth, but didn’t say anything. He was grateful for it. He hadn’t meant to drink so much the night before, but he’d thought it might stave off bad dreams. It hadn’t.

“Where are those boys?” Jessie asked, walking through the kitchen with a basket of laundry. “I won’t have their chores going undone.”

“They’re checking the fences,” Olivia said, studying the sewing in her lap instead of her mother. He’d never seen Olivia look so intently at a piece of fabric. “I’m sure they’ll be back soon.”

“Zachary shouldn’t be out for that long,” Jessie said, her brows furrowed.

Olivia squirmed, then poked herself with the needle and frowned. “Don’t know where they got the idea. More trouble than they’re worth.”

“Don’t you say that about your brothers,” Jessie replied, but there was no rancor in her tone.

Lucas waited until Jessie had left the room before leaning across the table and whispering, “So where are they really?”

Olivia scowled at Lucas. “You think I’m lying?” This time the sharp tone didn’t work. Lucas nodded and Olivia deflated. “They’re out treasure hunting.”

Again? Lucas wanted to ask. Still? There was someone out there who wanted them gone and didn’t care if he put them in the ground to get them gone. Charlie had just been killed. Instead, Lucas asked, “Where can I find them?”

Olivia looked around the room, as if confirming her mother really was gone, and Lucas realized he really wasn’t going to like the answer.
