Chapter 18

Hope

I sat on the counter in his kitchen, watching him make eggs at the stove feet away from me. I hadn’t intended on sitting there until he hefted me up, kissing me madly when I entered the room. “I’ve been thinking,” I said, taking a deep breath.

“I thought I felt the earth shake,” Puck said, who had come up for breakfast after spending another night on the downstairs couch. Nicole had gone home sometime in the night, and I wasn’t sure how close the two had gotten, but Puck seemed to be in a happy mood.

“Hey, watch it, that’s the mother of my child you’re teasing,” he said, rolling up a towel to pop him with.

Puck chuckled. “Aw, is someone a protective father already? Your kid is going to like me better anyway.” He grabbed a coffee cup as I cleared my throat dramatically.

“Excuse me. I have a very important announcement,” I said, tapping the counter with a wooden spoon I’d found beside me. “May I have your attention?”

“Attention granted,” Puck said.

Chris laughed. “I’m listening.”

“I’ve decided I’m definitely going to finish school.” I hoped it would ease his mind. “But with the baby coming and our decision to remain together, I feel we need to figure out some sort of game plan.”

Puck finished making his cup of coffee and turned from the counter. “That’s my cue. This is way too serious for me.”

When he was gone, I waited for Chris’s response. He nodded, cracking an egg into the pan. “Actually, I’d wanted to talk to you about that. I don’t want you to quit school either.”

“Well, I’m going to need a different job, that’s for sure. Especially when my father figures out that I’m going to have a baby.” I dreaded telling him anything.

“Your father is going to have to accept it. What’s done is done, and we’re both happy. He can’t control the universe. Especially ours.”

“I’ve been trying to figure out if I should keep the apartment or find a different one.”

“We’ll find one together. I don’t want you living alone, and it feels like the next step.” He turned his eyes up to me. “Do you agree?”

I had hoped he would suggest living together. “Yes, I do. I’m glad I brought it up.”

“Me too, and I’m happy about school.”

“Did you ever hear anything else about the sale of the painting?”

He gave a bleak look. “Not yet, and I honestly haven’t ever seen a deal take this long. It’s not like Virginia to keep me in the dark either, which has me a bit worried. It’s times like this where I wish I had an agent.”

“You should hire one.” I hopped down off the counter.

“Careful,” he said, stepping away from the eggs. “Don’t fall.”

“Relax. I’ve hardly become that delicate.” I gave him a kiss. “I just wanted some juice.” I opened the door of the fridge to find two jugs of juice.

“Don’t drink the one labeled Malibu, it’s got rum in it. Puck mixes it now and then.”

I spotted the jug of orange that had a duct tape label with MALIBU written in bold, black letters.
