LUCKY

While I don’t recommend being on the run from the mob, if you have to do it, at least wear nice underwear. I wasn’t kidding when I told Anthony I feel like a new woman.

I didn’t get much more out of Grace except that she doesn’t know more than what she told me and that she’s back on Long Island. I guess the honeymoon is over in more ways than one.

Now Grace has gone dark again, and I’m left lying low in Welkin’s Ridge. I briefly considered hitting the road again, but I figure I’m as safe here as anywhere, and anyway, I’m not going to get far on the money I have.

Fortunately, there’s plenty here to keep me busy, what with the house, the café, and the stirrings of a plan to do something about Anthony. What, exactly, I’m not sure, but if I can’t fix Joyce’s life, maybe I can at least do something about his.

“Sorry, I’m late!” Bailey runs into the Flying Saucer from the back door, tying a black apron around her slender waist as she comes.

“You’re not late—”

Bailey doesn’t wait for me to finish my sentence. “And I’m afraid I’m going to need to leave at three. Lucky, can you cover the rest of my shift after? I’m so sorry to ask, but I have to clean two cabins before guests arrive at five, and then be at the Cantina by six, and I’m not sure how I’m going to get it—” She stops in her tracks and looks around the cafe. “Oh, it’s not that busy.”

“No, it’s fine,” I tell her. “Grab a coffee, relax.”

Joyce looks concerned. “You sure you’re not overdoing it, Bai? When was the last time you had a day off? A whole day, I mean. Not just from here.”

“I’m so close to having enough money to put down a deposit on the Pearson House. Just a few more weeks.”

“What’s the Pearson House?” I ask.

Bailey’s cheeks glow pink as she helps herself to a scoop of ice and pours cold espresso over it. “Oh, it’s nothing.”

Joyce snorts. “You’re basically killing yourself over it. It’s not nothing.” She turns to me. “Bailey’s going to start an art gallery, which is a great idea. It’s definitely something this town needs. The tourists are going to love it, and it will help bring in more of them, and there are a ton of talented artists in the area who need a place to showcase and sell their work. It’s a win-win-win-win.”

“That sounds fantastic,” I agree, wondering why Bailey didn’t bring this up before. But she’s kind of shy and doesn’t talk about herself much, so maybe it’s not a surprise. “Are you an artist?”

“Oh, no!” Bailey takes a gulp of her coffee. “But my grandmother is. She moved here back in the seventies, when Welkin’s Ridge had a kind of artists’ cooperative commune thing here.”

I nod. “Yeah, I remember the Mayor saying something about that.”

“It sort of fell apart in the late eighties, but some of the artists stuck around,” Bailey explains.
