Chapter Nine

Barbie

“You look well, George.” Mrs. Lexington was older but still refined.

“Thank you, Mrs. Lexington. You are looking radiant, as usual.”

“Oh, you’re such a charmer.”

“I’m sorry to drop in on you after all these years,” I said. “I was walking and found myself on your street. It seemed like an invisible hand directed me.”

“You are always welcome here. You know that.” She motioned for me to follow her into the lounge.

“And Mr. Lexington is well, I hope?”

Her faced darkened slightly. “He passed three years ago. Heart attack. It was hard on all of us.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I didn’t know.” I leaned forward, unsure how I should act.

“There was no way for you to know. I miss him.”

“And Barbie?” I asked as casually as I could, but my heart was racing.

“She’s got two lovely children. Divorced, unfortunately, but coping well.”

“Please send her my regards. I haven’t seen or heard from her since, you know, then.” All I could think about was that she wasn’t married.

“Tell her yourself. She’ll be back any time now. She likes to take them for a walk before their nap time.”

“Oh,” I said. My mouth felt like it had glue in it. “How old are her children?”

“Seven and five. Both boys. Lovely children. I know it isn’t under the best of circumstances, but I’m glad to have them around me.”

“I’m sure. They say children are the investment and grandchildren are the dividends. You are just reaping what is your due.” I had heard it before and thought it was clever. It was the first time I was able to say that nugget in conversation.

Barbie’s mother dabbed her eyes lightly and smiled. I took that as a good sign.

I heard the keys in the door and then the sound of children being undressed and straining to be let free. Two streaks of energy burst into the room, immaculately dressed, and jumped into Mrs. Lexington’s arms.

“See? They are adorable.”

Just as quickly, they disappeared.

“Only one cookie each,” a voice called after them. Barbie walked in, flushed and smiling. When her eyes fell on me, her smile froze. “George?”

I stood up. “Barbie.”

She came towards me and gave me a kiss on each cheek. “Why are you here? Is everything okay?”

“I was in the area and thought I’d pop in. I’m sorry to hear about your father.” I didn’t say anything about her divorce.

“Thank you. You are kind to say that.”

“I liked him.”

“He liked you.”

We were silent for a moment as we took each other in.

“I guess I should be going. I don’t want to take up too much of your time.”

“Will I see you again?” she asked.

“If you want,” I said. “I’m in town most of the time. Perhaps we can take in a dinner and a show?”

“Sounds perfect.” She was smiling and I remembered why I fell in love with her all those years ago.

I picked her up with a limo from her house and we went to see West Side Story and then had dinner at Bond 45.
