Kat met Dean and the dog on the porch with a weak smile. The scent of fresh laundry wafted out from the open door as Kat reached down to greet Hermione with a rub to her furry neck.

“I guess it was to be expected,” Dean said with a shake of his head.

“What?” Kat asked as she straightened up and looked him in the eye.

Dean shrugged. “That I’d end up coming in second to Hermione.”

Kat rolled her eyes then threw her arms around his neck in a tight embrace. “She is less of a troublemaker than you.”

He really couldn’t argue that.

“Come in.” Kat released her iron grip and held the door open. “Ignore the laundry lying all over the couch, I wanted to watch Avengers as I folded.”

“Good choice.” He knelt to unhook the leash from Hermione’s collar once inside.

“So,” Kat said, hands on hips. “Where are you going and what are you investigating?”

Dean explained about the new cases and that they all came from the same gym. “I’m just going to the gym to see what I can find out from the owner, he’s meeting me there. I have the beginnings of a hypothesis forming, and I want to check a couple of things out.”

“Isn’t that dangerous? What if you get the disease?”

“I won’t. The gym is closed down for now and we’re just going to be meeting in the owner’s office.”

Kat folded her arms and raised an eyebrow at him.

He sighed. “I’ll take an N-95 mask with me, in case I have an uncontrollable urge to explore.”
