This transfer includes the lease of the building, household goods and furniture, but excludes my personal possessions.
The document was dated December 28.
“Normally,” Maigret remarked, looking up, “agreements of this kind are signed in the presence of a lawyer. Why didn’t you do this?”
“Because there was no point in paying the fee. When people are honest…”
“Was your husband honest, then?”
“We were, anyway. ”
“This paper was signed three weeks ago. From that time, Planchon was out of the business. I wonder why he went on working for it.”
“And why he went on living in this house when he had been finished with it for still longer?”
“In fact, he worked as an employee?”
“More or less.”
“Was he paid?”
“I suppose so. That was up to Roger.”
“Were the thirty thousand francs paid by check?”
“In bills.”
“Here?”
“Not in the street, anyway.”
“In front of witnesses?”
“All three of us were witnesses. Our private affairs have nothing to do with anyone else.”
“Weren’t there any conditions to this arrangement?”
The question seemed to give her pause, and she remained silent for a moment or two.
“There was one. But he hasn’t obeyed it.”
“What was that?”
“That he should go away and give me my divorce at last.”
“Still, he’s gone.”
“It took three weeks!”
“Let’s get back to Monday.”
“Again? Is this going to take long?”
“I hope not. You were in bed. Prou came and joined you. Were you awake when he went to bed?”
“Yes.”
“Did you look at the time?”
“If you must know, we had other things to do…”
“Were you both asleep when your husband came in?”
“No.”
“Did he open the door with his key?”
“Not with a pen, anyway.”
“He could have been too drunk to open the door himself.”
“He was drunk but he found the keyhole.”
“Where did he normally sleep?”
“Here. On a cot.”
She got up again, opened the closet, and showed him a folded cot.
“Was it already set up?”
“Yes. I fixed it myself before I went to bed, so he wouldn’t bang around for half an hour. ”
“And he didn’t go to bed on Monday?”
“No. We heard him go up to the next floor.”
“To kiss his daughter?”
“He never kissed his daughter in that state.”
“What did he go to do?”
“We were wondering. So we listened. He opened the closet on the landing, where his things were. Then he went into the little room we use as an attic, because there isn’t one in this house. There was a noise on the stairs, and I had to stop Roger from going to see what was happening.”
“What was happening?”
“He was bringing down his suitcases.”
“How many suitcases?”
“Two. We only had two in the house, anyway, because we never really went anywhere.”
“Didn’t you speak to him? Didn’t you see him go?”
“Yes. When he was back in the living room, I got up. I motioned to Roger to stay where he was, so as not to cause a scene.”
“Weren’t you afraid? You told me that when your husband had been drinking he was violent, and that once or twice he’d threatened you.”
“Roger was in earshot.”
“How did your last conversation go?”
“I could hear him talking to himself, through the door, and he seemed to be snickering.
