Quentin plugged the USB from his cell phone into the port on the truck’s dashboard to keep his phone properly charged. He’d been using it a lot and had an idea his next phone bill would be damn high. Fortunately Tyler’s budget was generous so likely it wouldn’t matter too much.
The good news was he had mountains of information to share. He was able to update his Facebook status and tweet far more often than the minimum amount Tyler had ordered. He even had a few extra blogs written thanks to the sexy pictures from the gay nightclub, plus the scenery and information from his travels.
What he really wanted was a picture of him kissing Juz or Juz kissing him. It was one thing to get together inside a locked bedroom, but how would Juz feel about kissing him in public. It wasn’t just for the blog, although that would be good. He wanted to kiss Juz openly. The man spoke the weirdest version of English on the planet, but he was sex on a stick and sent Quentin’s libido into overdrive with every smile from his gap-toothed grin and shake of his overlong blond locks. If he ever took his sweater off, Quentin might come on the spot from sheer excitement.
“We’re coming in to Nevertire now. Are you hungry?” Juz asked, interrupting Quentin’s idle contemplation of the passing scenery.
“Sure. Apart from the fact that the land is browner than at home, the open spaces and trees and such, it could be rural America.”
“Great. We’ll have a pie for lunch. It really should be served in a brown paper bag to be legit, but they make the real deal here so it’ll taste dinki di.”
Once again, Quentin found some of the words meaningless, but he understood pie. What he didn’t understand was why one would eat just pie for lunch. He liked apple pie. Also pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and most other kinds of pie. But that wasn’t his definition of lunch. And in a brown paper bag. What did a paper sack have to do with pie?
Quentin recognized the tall metal structures beside the road as grain silos as they drove past them, and there were a few, very few, houses, and then the hotel where they stopped. Inside looked like any public bar anywhere in rural America. Juz waved Quentin to one of the handful of tables and said to the man leaning against the wall behind the bar, “I have a client from America with me. I thought I’d introduce him to a genuine Aussie meat pie.”
“Can do. Coming up in five. Want a couple of beers as well?”
“Thanks, mate.”
The beers arrived almost instantly, ice cold and with a welcoming yeasty smell of hops.
“They’re the real deal here, too.”
Quentin sipped his cautiously, not knowing what Australian laws were about the alcohol content of drinks, but it tasted much the same as a full strength beer back home, although with a slightly stronger, more bitter flavor.
