Chapter Twenty-Two

“Garrett.”

Garrett stopped on the basement stairs and turned back to the door he’d just stormed out of.

“Garrett, can you hear me? Is this thing an intercom?”

Yeah, it was. How the hell had she found the button? It was hiding in plain sight, right behind the light switch next to the door. However, you had to open the light switch panel to see the button.

She’d been snooping, searching for secret exits and entrances. That was how she found it. Nosy ass. Garrett jogged back down the stairs and stood next to the code panel.

“Garrett, if you can hear me, knock on the door.”

To knock or not to knock, that was the question? He did want to hit something.

“Please, Garrett.”

Fuck. Garrett rested his forehead against the door. She’d said please. How could he not knock now? Garrett grabbed the knocker on the door and banged it three times.

“Oh my gosh Garrett, you’re there. Great.”

Yeah. He was there.

“Now unlock this fucking door. You said I was a guest.”

What the fuck?

“We don’t lock guests in their rooms here at the Killer Bed and Breakfast, Garrett.”

He couldn’t stop the smile from spreading across his face. This motherfucker.

“Unlock it, now.”

Demanding ass. Yet, he found himself placing his thumb against the knob. He moved back as the lock clicked. Garrett opened the door. There she stood, beautiful and furious at the same time, with her hands on her hips.

“You do not get to lock me in here anymore, Garrett. I don’t care how mad you get. Do you understand?”

Beautiful. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Good. Now, when are you going to put this fucking desk together?”

Damn, he liked her. “Tomorrow.”

She nodded. “Okay. Well, that was all I wanted.”

That wasn’t all he wanted. He wanted more. Lots more. With her. She wasn’t ready to hear that yet. And he wasn’t a patient man. He’d try to be though, for her.

“Good night, Oni.”

“Good night, Garrett.”

He wasn’t ready to walk away. But he did. He turned and jogged up the stairs. Her voice stopped him midway.

“Garrett?”

He looked back.

“Don’t be mad at me, okay?”

Nik was right. Women like her made men like him weak. He could feel it happening. He didn’t know how to stop it.

“I don’t think I could ever truly be mad at you, Oni.”

There was that smile he craved. That smile was his weakness. He kept staring until she closed the door. He lingered for a second, hoping she’d open the door again and invite him inside.

Wishful thinking on his part. After a couple of minutes passed, Garrett turned and jogged up the stairs. When he reached the top, he stared toward the back of the house. Did he still want to take out his anger in the fighting ring?

Shit. What anger? He no longer felt like battling it out in the ring. Just as quickly as she’d caused it, she’d put out the fire that fueled his anger. Instead of seeking out someone to fight, Garrett returned to the med bay.

After a quick shower, he dried off and slipped on some boxers.
