Fifteenth Move:
Old man II: âThat was a good enough move. â Old man I: âI know. Now your queen is locked.â
Old man II: âNo, it isnât. I could take it back.â Old man I: âBut then your last move would be wasted. See this is what we call smart playing.â
Old man II: âYou are missing that my queen is now controlling the line â¦, never mind.â, and he gave a bent smile as he bowed his head down to hide his expression.
Old man I was lost in his own world of analysis and reasoning and didnât notice Old man IIâs words.
Old man I: âI was thinking and this is weird man. So, if we are dead now and decaying, our brain are functioning spontaneously and we have absolutely no control over our thoughts or actions. We cannot force a thought now so there is no way for us to test this hypothesis.â
Old man II: âThat is correct, but is unsettling. There should be some way to test a hypothesis.â
Old man I: âIn this case we donât, nobody has ever been able to test any hypothesis on death.â
Old man II: âWhat about people with near death experiences. They claim to have observed deathâ
Old man I: âTheir experiences are only fragments of whole picture and doesnât convey anything substantial. Also, near death and death should be very different.â
Old man II: âThat makes sense. But there are ways to test hypotheses explaining death. If you accept the philosophy of formalism, then the whole world could be construed as a mere figment of thoughtful minds. So, the world would exist only in presence of a facility to hold thoughts. Basically, world would be just a thought as per formalist philosophy and so would be death. Death would just be an absence of thought facility.â
Old man I: âHmmm! I have never been convinced by formalist philosophy as such. So, as per formalist philosophy we all have our own created worlds in our minds very different from others, or rather there are no others then and they all are figments from our minds themselves.
Then how come we are unable to control others? I mean, we should be able to control the world after some effort.â
Old man II: âHmmm! Actually, we are able to control the world if you think about it. Using some effort, one is always able to influence outcomes. Consider the fields of sports, etc. people do that all the time.â
Old man I: âYes, that is correct but I am talking about big changes in the world, why not be able to bring about them.â
Old man II: âI think that is due to the logical conflicts that would arise in trying to force a thought. You, see worlds in our own minds also should be mathematically consistent.â
Old man I: âThat should be the case, and greater the processing power of a mind, greater would be the ability to process the logical conflicts in minds and be able to control the world more.â
