Chapter 18

Lissa

“Uptight, arrogant, lying little—”

“Lissa,” Gale says gently and squeezes my hand as we walk up to the path—or where it used to be. “They might still be listening.”

“Good.” I’m pissed off at them for leading us astray and dumping us away from the path the moment I didn’t do what they wanted me to.

Gale sighs. “I definitely should have warned you about them. I just didn’t see any sign of them last night.” He rubs his cheeks, where stubble is just appearing. “At least they didn’t make me sleep for long.”

“Oh,” I whisper as my breath catches in horror. What if I’d stayed with them? Could they have stolen me away somewhere that time passes differently?

“How did they take you?” We’ve reached the spot on the edge of the pool where the path snaked past it, but it’s gone now.

I swallow hard. “Don’t you remember waking up?” He shakes his head grimly. So what I saw—Gale telling me to go ahead without him—was an illusion.

Fuck. I should know by now not to trust anything when magic users are around.

“I just woke up in a place that looked a lot like this, only it was magical. We were in a bed, in a little stone house. They had treehouses, too. It looked really pretty and bright.” I shake my head as I look around at the dark forest.

No hint of a path to my untrained eye, and despite turning in a slow circle to look in every direction, Gale’s faintly worried expression never fades. I swallow hard. That’s not reassuring.

“I think we defiled their sacred pool, though,” I say suddenly. “That makes me feel better. Am I a bad person?”

Gale laughs and pulls me into him, letting go of my hand and playfully pinching my butt. “If you are, so am I.”

I smack away his hand and roll my eyes, but at least he makes me smile. “What are we going to do?”

“I assume it was an illusion to lead us straight to their den,” Gale murmurs. “They must have set up a wrong turn somewhere.”

The pool was on our left when we walked up to it last night, but if I look in the direction we came, I just see scrubby forest floor. I don’t want to backtrack.

Frustration knots in my chest and I wipe my eyes, my throat tight. For a moment my heart beats fast as I wait for my powers to burst through, but they don’t.

Phew.

“Okay. We keep going ahead,” Gale declares and takes my hand, leading me through the trees.

I trust his expertise and walk carefully by his side as we pick our way carefully. The minutes turn into hours, and my disorientation only gets worse. The unchanging light around us plays tricks on my mind.

When the forest floor starts growing wet, I step carefully, but before long we have to stop. We’ve reached a dense swamp, the smell of decaying ferns and vegetation thick in my nose.

The pools in the ground are glowing different colors—and some of them are bubbling softly.
