Chapter Six
Using the loader, Darien hauled him directly into the sick bay. After piling a few blankets around Ricky’s body to keep him warm, Darien gave himself an injection to kill the pain in his shoulder. Taking a deep breath, he yanked the bolt out of his shoulder, but even his strained yelp wasn’t enough to make Ricky stir.
Blood flowed freely from the now open wound and he quickly used a flesh-mesh to seal it. Ricky’s chest rose and fell three times before the flesh-mesh had done its work. Letting out a pent up breath, the pain eased and he regained more mobility in his arm. He wasn’t healed, not by a long shot, but enough to get them out of here without further injury. He strapped Ricky down, then kissed slack lips in the newly grayish face.
“Be back in a few moments. I’m going to get us the fuck out of here. Hold on, please hold on.” One more kiss and he ran to the bridge. Fear rode him hard. Willing his fingers not to tremble, Darien made the smoothest and quickest transition through atmosphere he’d ever managed, set the shuttle for geostationary orbit, then ran back to sick bay.
For a heart-stopping second he thought Ricky had stopped breathing, but that muscular chest lifted and Darien shut his eyes briefly in relief.
Darien tried a few of the high-tech medical instruments he’d acquired over the years on Ricky, the ones he dared use, anyway. After even the flesh-mesh failed to work, failed to recognize Ricky as a suitable patient, Darien threw it across the room with a frustrated shout.
A lot of the situations he’d found himself in involved injuries where none of the participants could afford med-tech, so Darien had a lot of experience with basic, primal, brutal first aid. But was he missing something vital that he could or should be doing for Ricky’s alien physiology? Even more terrifying…what if he made it worse?
He cleaned and bandaged the wounds as best he could, but Ricky’s skin, cool to the touch, was grayer than before, and an odd little wheeze accompanied his every breath.
“No, no, no. Please. You have to be okay.”
Why the fuck was this happening? And more importantly, why wasn’t Ricky waking up? How could they be compatible enough to have unbelievable, mind-blowing sex, but not compatible enough for his fucking medical equipment to even register Ricky as a life form?
Darien slammed his fist against the wall, yelling as the pain exploded beyond what the pain-killers in his system could manage.
He needed help. Ricky needed help, certainly more than he could provide. And damned if he was going to sit here and watch Ricky die.
If his own medical equipment wouldn’t work, was there any point in returning to Elora Ki…even if he did, then what? Who was going to take care of him there? Darien had no fucking idea how long the trip was to an Ankylos planet…
Darien froze. The Ankylos visited every year. Maybe the fleet contingent
