CHAPTER TEN

At six o’clock in the morning, one of the chiefs brought the next shift’s crew to the scene to relieve them. Joey turned over the engine to the oncoming engineer, and they all piled into Perez’s Tahoe to head back to the station.

“Gonna be a nice day,” Joey said, squinting out the back passenger window. The previous day’s rain had passed, and the sun was inching its way above the horizon.

“Good work, guys,” Perez said as he dropped them off in front of the station. “Reid, can I talk to you for a second?”

As the others walked away, she propped herself against the open window of the passenger door. “Yeah, Chief?”

“I know you’re tired, so I’ll be brief. How is your crew adjusting?”

“Fine, sir,” she answered quickly.

“Any problems?”

“No, sir.”

He studied her through narrowed eyes, and Reid tried not to squirm under his gaze. Whatever her issues with her crew, she Þ gured they were hers to sort out.

“Good. Get some rest, Reid.”

“Yes, sir.” Reid tapped her hand against the door and turned away.

In the parking lot, Isabel half stood and half leaned against her car. As Reid drew near, Isabel could see the exhaustion in

her eyes. Reid had shed her turnout coat, and it and her helmet dangled heavily from her arms. The suspenders that looped over her shoulders did nothing to conceal the Þ tted T-shirt that was plastered to her body with what Isabel guessed was a combination of sweat and water. Her hair was wet and had run tiny rivers through the streaks of soot that covered her neck and face. All in all, she looked completely worn out and sexy as hell. Where did that come from? When did I start noticing things like that?

“Rough night, Captain?” Caught up in her previous thoughts, Isabel couldn’t keep the hint of ß irtation out of her voice.

Reid raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment. “You could say that. Apartment Þ re. I don’t want to get in your car like this. Do you have time for me to grab a quick shower?”

“Sure.” Imagining Reid standing beneath the spray, soapy water cascading down her toned body and steam billowing around her, Isabel felt her mouth suddenly become dry.

“Do you want to wait inside?”

“It’s actually shaping up to be a beautiful morning. I think I’ll stay out here and enjoy it.” I need to clear my head. What the hell was that? Some kind of teenage boy porn fantasy?

“I’ll be quick,” Reid said as she hurried toward the station.

She rushed through a shower and pulled on a clean uniform from her locker. After towel-drying her hair, she glanced in the mirror and shoved a few strands around with her Þ ngers. Deciding it would do until she got home, she walked back through the kitchen.

“Hey, Reid.” Megan sat at the table sipping a cup of coffee.

“Hey. You headed home soon?”

“Yeah, I just wanted to get a quick shot of caffeine before I headed out.”

Reid paused, resting her hands on the back of an empty chair.
