She slid a piece of paper and a pen across the counter. Meg pulled off her gloves and picked it up. The girl poured a cup full of kernels into the machine. Meg watched, fascinated. The kernels burst and popped, and soon the glass display box was overflowing. The lobby filled with the aroma of butter and salt.

“I can’t believe this place is still open.”

“For now. When this place goes under, I’m going to get a job at the multiplex. They’ve got ergonomic chairs and a coffee bar and get all the first-run flicks. We’re playing mostly indies and old movies. Who wants to pay to see an old movie when they could watch it for free in their living rooms?”
