Pit of the Beast-Men

In no more than a moment, the leopard-man had descended into the pit. Eve, he held up high over his head, in both his extended man-arms, one hand-claw clutch her hair, the other bracing the hollow of her naked back.

The ape-men gathered around, twenty or thirty of them, jumping and swinging their arms, screeching in excitement.

To Eve’s horror, the foliage surrounding the pit still rustled. How many more of these hideous creatures were lurking still hidden?

The mob of apes had gathered close, surrounding her and the leopard.

The leopard-man’s demeanor changed.

It evidently dawned on him that things could get out of control. He lowered her to the ground. She found herself clinging helplessly to his haunch.

The leopard-man roared, lashing out with its hand-claws—talons extended—nearly grazing the nearest ape-men.

“Back! Back, you hideous halflings! The woman is weak. Tender. If you will have her, you will behave—not as animals, but as men.”

This seemed to have the effect of shaming the apes, or at least, getting their attention.

“Are we not men?” cried the leopard.

The apes began to mutter. We are men. We are men. But at the same time, they had not stopped leering at her. Many started playing with their heavy black cocks, which were growing thick, and hard as the rocks of the canyon walls.

We are men! We are men! The doctor has made us so.

“The doctor!” exclaimed Eve.

“The doctor has made us so!” said the leopard. “He has taken us—once base, filthy animals—and, with his serums, he transforms us into men! Men! We are free men!”

So this was the terrible Dr. Melville’s secret work: these abominations, these monsters.

Eve reached up, stroking her leopard’s fur. “Please, you must take me away from here.”

The leopard touched her face, gently stroking her grimy cheek, and gave his answer.

“I will not let them hurt you. As long as I am here, I will protect you.”

A loud crack—Eve took it for a thunder-clap at first—broke the air.

The leopard-man spun, clutching its neck, and collapsed to the ground, with a defiant roar of pain.

A dart.

Eve then saw its source.

A hundred feet away, within the sheer canyon wall, a crevice had opened up. A hidden passageway, and in it stood two men: Melville, and behind him, Kensington.

Melville held the elephant gun responsible for the dart casually in the crook of his arm.

The ape-men backed away.

“You!” cried Eve.

Melville ignored her, as if she were simply one more of the animals. “Quickly, Kensington. The kit.”

Kensington was holding a small black case, and now he crouched to the ground, where he set the case and opened it.

He produced from it a thick syringe with a very long needle. He hooked two of his long fingers through the brass loops of its plunger.

Eve rose, and backed away. She turned to run—but to where she didn’t know. Not that she got far.

“Seize the female!” cried Dr. Melville. “Your master commands you.”

The apes did as told. More than a dozen sets of leathery paws groped her immediately. The apes were not subtle.
