Doctor Howard appeared benign and sympathetic to Edward’s dilemma, but other than examining the scarred-over injury to Edward’s skull, he said he could make no prognosis as to when Edward’s memory might return.

“Due to the nature of the injury and the fact it was not attended to, not even stitched by the looks of it, there must have been significant bleeding around the brain.”

“But there has been some considerable improvement, doctor,” Thomas said. “Originally, he could neither speak nor understand what was being said to him. Now, as you can see and hear, he can converse quite well.”

The doctor nodded. “Yes, if as you say he was in such a dire condition, he has made tremendous strides toward recovery.” He smiled at Edward. “I’m not an expert in matters of the mind, but apart from the memory loss, you seem to be in excellent shape.” He held a finger up in front of Edward’s eyes. “Follow my finger without turning your head.”

Edward did as the doctor instructed and Howard nodded with satisfaction. “There is no sign of delayed reaction and as far as I can tell you are alert and cognizant of everything around you. If I have to hazard a guess, I would say your memory will return to you in due course, or a sudden shock or fall might accelerate the process. However…” He chuckled quietly. “I don’t recommend either of those.”
