CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Anna and Kennedy were lying in bed talking. This was Kennedy’s favorite part of the day. No stress, no surgeries, no demanding patients or worried family members just her and Anna lying next to each other talking about their days. There was something so comforting in the routine that Kennedy and Anna had established and Kennedy thanked god every day that she had met, and yes, fallen in love with this wonderful woman beside her. “Thank you for taking me to the fair today. I had fun.” Anna said turning on her side and lying her head on Kennedy’s shoulder. “You are very welcome” Kennedy replied laying a kiss on top of Anna’s head. “It was fun. I hadn’t done anything like that in a long time.” Anna snuggled closer. “Me either, I used to take Micah as a child to all of the carnivals, but after she got sick, well…” Kennedy held Anna tighter. She knew that she still struggled with almost losing her only child. Not many mothers had to plan for the eventual death of their child, but Anna had and it had not left her unscathed. Kennedy had found that the best thing she could do for Anna was to just listen, and so that’s what she did whenever Anna felt the need to revisit Micah’s illness and what they had gone through. Anna sighed. “I was so lonely during that time. I had put everything and everyone aside to care for Micah. I still had friends but we weren’t close anymore. I tried to remain so strong and positive, for Micah’s sake, but sometimes on the bad days when Micah couldn’t even move without losing her breath, I would sit by her bed all night long, never taking my eyes off of her chest. I was so afraid that she would stop breathing, that she would die and I wouldn’t be there, so I sat there and watched her breathe.” Kennedy said nothing, just held Anna and was there for her. Anna shook herself free of the memory. “I shouldn’t dwell, I’m so thankful that Micah is healthy now, thankful to God, and to you.” Anna leaned on her elbow and placed a kiss on Kennedy’s lips. Kennedy smiled, reveling in the tingling that shot through her entire body every time Anna kissed her.

“You amaze me you know?” Kennedy said, rolling Anna on her back and lying on top of her. “You are the strongest, bravest woman I have ever known. I love you.” Kennedy’s eyes widened, she hadn’t really meant to say that out loud yet, but it was true and she didn’t regret it. Anna just stared at Kennedy for a moment. “You don’t have to say anything.” Kennedy began. “I just, well I just wanted you to know and…” Anna placed a finger over Kennedy’s lips, stopping her rambling. “I love you too.” She whispered and kissed the woman again. Kennedy smiled into the kiss. “You do? Really?” Anna laughed. Here
