CHAPTER 16

Barrett sat alert as they entered the city; the drive had been uneventful apart from two stops that involved small cash payments. Dubois complained that the army checkpoint located about an hour away from the city was always more expensive. Barrett for his part noted that the “militiamen” who had stopped them previously seemed more organized and orderly in their fee collection than the clearly stoned soldiers. Dubois had been lamenting the pending departure of the Americans since then. Barrett ignored him, and looked at the early morning view as they drove down a steep hill into Kabul. With the snow studded Hindu Kush as a backdrop, the predominately low city was dotted sporadically with some jutting interlopers of modern development in progress, thrusting up through the smoky haze that hung captured by the mountain air. Darting in between, a couple of military helicopters cut through the murky air, the low chug of their rotors audible despite the distance.

“We will have arranged for rooms at a good hotel. Unfortunately, we will need to leave any personal security items in the car. You may rest for a few hours, and this afternoon we will meet with our contact.” Dubois stated cheerily.

“Good, who are we meeting precisely?”

“My colleague prefers to remain anonymous in his efforts to provide assistance. I’m sure you can appreciate his perspective?”

“Of course.”

In Kabul, Peter was piecing together the history of Barasi from CIA files as well as reports drawn directly from British intelligence updates on Barasi’s involvement with the IRA, Baader Meinhoff, and Italy’s Red Brigade. He scrolled through to the present not finding anything very remarkable. Barasi fell out favor with Gaddafi, was exiled, and latched on with the resistance in exile. Returning after the revolution, he had worked with the fledging government while at the same time doing some arms deals on the side with neighboring African militaries taken from the vast array of weapons left over from the former regime. There was a brief note right after the Benghazi consulate attack when the agency was scouring the Libyans again: low level arms dealer, no known Islamist connections. Peter agreed, he didn’t see where Barasi could fit in anywhere. Regardless, following Cavanaugh’s direction, he clicked on “known associates” and printed out the list of Europeans who might possibly fit the description of Dubois’ mystery passenger. He had two Irish men, one of whom had been a high ranking operator turned by the British, a West German, and several old Russian KGB. He cross-referenced each name and was able to get updated photos on all but one of the Russians who had died in Afghanistan in 1988 during their withdrawal. Satisfied, he pulled together a short summary including the photos and sent them to Cavanaugh’s inbox. He then received the latest update from the drone on the current location of the two vehicles, and was not surprised that one was sitting in the secured parking lot of the Safi Landmark Hotel, good choice he noted, not high profile, and solid accommodations.
