As I headed off to catch my flight from Atlanta, I took a brief look back at Susie. Oh, my life, I have got to get her name right! To my surprise, she looked a little downcast at my leaving her.

We hadn’t talked about our exes all that much but I gathered her boyfriend had taken the opportunity to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour, successfully, and that she was still emotionally raw from their breakup.

On my side, I reminded myself, Teri had been there for me until only a matter of a few weeks before and I wasn’t ready yet to replace her as it were. What I hadn’t been prepared for was to find myself enjoying the company of a drop-dead gorgeous woman who knew as much, if not more, about our sport than I did. And that ignored the fact that she was clearly a far better golfer.

Those thoughts kept rambling through my brain for the entire flight down to Augusta and in the cab to the hotel. That part of my trip had gone smoothly but the wheels came off when I reached the hotel reception.

“I don’t understand. I have the reservation here. That’s your confirmation email. Why have you not got a room for me?” I was trying, very hard, not to lose my temper.

“I am sorry, Mr Ward. There has been a system malfunction and we have double booked several rooms including yours and the other guest has already checked in. My colleagues are trying to find you a room at one of our other hotels or other local establishments.”

I was forced to wait for almost an hour before I was told that there were no rooms within the city, although they had found one at a motel twenty miles away. I had already searched the internet for rooms without success and it seemed that they were at a premium or, to put it another way, non-existent.

What the hell was I to do? Twenty miles would be too far, it wasn’t as if I had a car. Maybe, just maybe, the hotel Susie was staying at might have a room. Dare I call her and ask? Was it fair to put my problem on her?

The hotel offered me the option of having a meal while they continued their efforts, even though they had already insisted that they could not find another room. I decided to accept.

An hour later, no room, nowhere to go, no change. I finally decided to make that call.

“Sophie, sorry. Do you know if your hotel has any rooms available? My booking has been messed up.”

She seemed to think about it before she told me to come to her hotel. I could share her room. That was not what I was looking for. I felt Teri looking over my shoulder. It’s two bedrooms, she was saying in my head, you don’t have to share the bed but, my love, if that’s what it takes, you should take it. We can’t be together but that shouldn’t mean you need be lonely for ever.
