âI admit, they handled it like absolute shit,â Mackie agrees, after Iâve finished telling her and Sarah about my conversation with Miles.
âYeah, they were in rare form last night. I donât think Iâve ever said âAaron freaking Cooperâ more times in one night. I was so mad at him,â Sarah says.
âWell, that makes all of us. But now I need to know, how do you feel about Davey? Please, be honest. Because I need to know if you hate him, too.â
âOh honey, I donât hate him,â Sarah says, rubbing my leg. âI wonât tell you heâs the guy Iâd have picked out for you, but I see he treats you well. I see how happy he makes you, and I also see how he looks at you. Itâs clear how he feels about you.â
âThen why canât the boys see that?â
âBecause they donât want to,â Mackie says.
âWhat about you?â I ask Mackie.
âI agree with what Sarah said. I mean, I canât say I ship you guys.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âYou donât know what shipping is?â Sarah asks.
âOf course, I do, but I thought it was for, like, movies and TV, not real life. And how does that apply to Davey and me?â
âOh, I think it totally has real life implications. Like, take for example Nick and Leigh,â Sarah says, referencing our friend, Nick, and the girl heâs spent most of his life crushing on, Leigh Romero. âTheyâve always had this thing for each other. Donât you hope they get together?â Sarah asks.
I shrug. âYeah, I guess so. Nick obviously loves herâ
âExactly, so you ship it,â Mackie says.
âOkay, back to Davey and me. How does this apply?â
âOkay, so I think you guys are fine together. You get along and have fun, but hypothetically speaking, if you guys had some fight and broke up and it was all tenuous between you, I wouldnât be wishing for you guys to get back together. Because IâI donât ship it. Iâm not invested in it. You know, not like if it were you and Aaronââ she keeps talking but I donât hear her because Iâm staring at her, mouth open, blinking slowly.
Finally, Sarah elbows Mackie and she realizes what she said.
Me and Aaron? Oh, please tell me that was another hypothetical.
âMackie. What the hell did you mean by that?â
Sarah and Mackie have some sort of intense conversation with their eyes, then Sarah shakes her head and Mackie stares at me.
âDo you guys ship Aaron and me?â I ask, blinking at them. âLike, do you see us together?â
âI think we all assumed that eventually the two of you would⦠get together,â Sarah says. âYou have a connection most people dream of.â
âYeah,â Mackie agrees. âWeâve seen it build between you over the years and sometimes we thinkââ
âYou could ship it?â I ask with disdain.
âWell, some of us maybe already do,â Sarah says softly.
My eyes grow wide. And realization hits. Hard.
âYou guys? And the boys? Is that why theyââ
Mackie waves a hand. âI donât think thatâs why they were doing it.
