“I admit, they handled it like absolute shit,” Mackie agrees, after I’ve finished telling her and Sarah about my conversation with Miles.

“Yeah, they were in rare form last night. I don’t think I’ve ever said ‘Aaron freaking Cooper’ more times in one night. I was so mad at him,” Sarah says.

“Well, that makes all of us. But now I need to know, how do you feel about Davey? Please, be honest. Because I need to know if you hate him, too.”

“Oh honey, I don’t hate him,” Sarah says, rubbing my leg. “I won’t tell you he’s the guy I’d have picked out for you, but I see he treats you well. I see how happy he makes you, and I also see how he looks at you. It’s clear how he feels about you.”

“Then why can’t the boys see that?”

“Because they don’t want to,” Mackie says.

“What about you?” I ask Mackie.

“I agree with what Sarah said. I mean, I can’t say I ship you guys.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“You don’t know what shipping is?” Sarah asks.

“Of course, I do, but I thought it was for, like, movies and TV, not real life. And how does that apply to Davey and me?”

“Oh, I think it totally has real life implications. Like, take for example Nick and Leigh,” Sarah says, referencing our friend, Nick, and the girl he’s spent most of his life crushing on, Leigh Romero. “They’ve always had this thing for each other. Don’t you hope they get together?” Sarah asks.

I shrug. “Yeah, I guess so. Nick obviously loves her”

“Exactly, so you ship it,” Mackie says.

“Okay, back to Davey and me. How does this apply?”

“Okay, so I think you guys are fine together. You get along and have fun, but hypothetically speaking, if you guys had some fight and broke up and it was all tenuous between you, I wouldn’t be wishing for you guys to get back together. Because I—I don’t ship it. I’m not invested in it. You know, not like if it were you and Aaron—” she keeps talking but I don’t hear her because I’m staring at her, mouth open, blinking slowly.

Finally, Sarah elbows Mackie and she realizes what she said.

Me and Aaron? Oh, please tell me that was another hypothetical.

“Mackie. What the hell did you mean by that?”

Sarah and Mackie have some sort of intense conversation with their eyes, then Sarah shakes her head and Mackie stares at me.

“Do you guys ship Aaron and me?” I ask, blinking at them. “Like, do you see us together?”

“I think we all assumed that eventually the two of you would… get together,” Sarah says. “You have a connection most people dream of.”

“Yeah,” Mackie agrees. “We’ve seen it build between you over the years and sometimes we think—”

“You could ship it?” I ask with disdain.

“Well, some of us maybe already do,” Sarah says softly.

My eyes grow wide. And realization hits. Hard.

“You guys? And the boys? Is that why they—”

Mackie waves a hand. “I don’t think that’s why they were doing it.
