Chapter 30

Tanesha poured a ladle of liquid batter into the frying pan that evening, and the sweet scent of pancakes filled her kitchen—the aroma of victory.

Mark had approached her desk that morning. “Is Lisa in yet?”

Tanesha smiled innocently. “I haven’t seen her. She left early yesterday, too.”

Her boss bit his lip. “She wasn’t feeling well. I hope she’s okay.”

“She seemed fine to me.”

Mark frowned. “She was going to touch up the slides for my presentation at ten o’clock.”

Tanesha read the time off her monitor. “Yikes. That’s soon. Want me to have a look?”

“Please!”

“Your wish is my command. Send it over, and I’ll do my magic.”

Mark grinned. “Thanks, Tee. You’re a lifesaver.”

“I won’t let you down.”

Tanesha got to work on the presentation. She fixed Mark’s typos and corrected the animation order of bullet points. Tanesha had never enjoyed her work more. Her plan had come together perfectly except for one minor glitch.

Lisa hadn’t handed in her resignation. The coward had chickened out and flown the coop. Never mind. Tanesha adjusted her plan and called Detective Cooper. Felonies such as false impersonation meant prison time, and Lisa Smith would soon wish she’d followed Tanesha’s orders to the letter. Serves you right. Her attempt to usurp Tanesha’s throne had ended in a sweeping defeat. Lisa Smith was history, and Mark didn’t suspect a thing. Order had returned to the universe, and Tanesha had tasted revenge. Take that, Taylor West.

She added fancy transitions and returned the presentation on time. Mark would trust no one else with mission-critical tasks again. Soon, he’d forget about that skinny-assed witch.

Only Eddie had soured at her triumph. He wheeled his chair into her cubicle.

“What have you done?”

Tanesha grinned sweetly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

His eyelid jittered. “Did you get Lisa fired?”

“How would I do that?”

“Because of what I told you.”

“Since when is going to the post office a crime? Not my problem she doesn’t show up at work.”

Eddie retreated with his chair and fumed in silence. She’d stumped him. In a moment of anger, he’d handed her that crucial lead. But he had no idea what Tanesha had learned from her cousin or how she’d leverage the information. The poor fool had fallen under Lisa’s spell, too. He’ll get over her. Lisa would have ruined him. Tanesha had done him a favor.

Her secret victory had only one downside. She couldn’t tell anyone about it. Who cares? Tanesha was celebrating at home with her pancakes and a bottle of red.

She turned off the stove and carried her plate to the kitchen table. Tanesha anointed the pancake tower with maple syrup and raised her wine glass.

“Here’s to you, Lisa Smith. Amy Walker. Whoever the hell you are. Here’s to never seeing your skinny ass again. Ha!”

Tanesha gulped her wine and dug into her festive meal. Mm. She savored the flat cakes’ sweet, warm softness.

There came a knocking on the door. Tanesha swallowed her mouthful. She wasn’t expecting any visitors tonight. Was her neighbor’s kid selling brownies again? Tanesha was in a charitable mood.
