The days after we kiss, are pure torture. I can honestly say I remember nothing of what happens after it because my entire brain is dedicated to not staring at Charlotte.

And thinking about our kiss.

But she doesn’t talk to me, other than to ask one French related question.

I spent the entire weekend trying not to think about her, but when has that ever worked for me?

Never in my life have I wanted someone as badly as I wanted her in the park. I should have said something to make her stay. At the very least, I was gentlemanly enough to call her the Uber. My brain wasn’t totally gone.

Even though Eli manipulated me into spending time alone with Charlotte, I’m so grateful he did. She’s not just a pretty student. There’s potential there for something real. I know it.

The question is, what do I do about it? It’s not a question of crossing a line anymore. That line has been thoroughly crossed or at least blurred.

I walk into class, distracted and distant. Charlotte’s seat is empty. Did I scare her off completely?

One minute before class officially starts, Charlotte bursts into the room. She’s out of breath, looking a little frazzled. She glances at me for half a second before busying herself with her notes.

I rush through the lesson, barely remembering what I said at all. Every fiber of my being is honed in on Charlotte. I have to avoid looking at her at all. At the end, I dismiss the class and plan to hurry out of the room. I can’t think straight when Charlotte is so close to me.

We can’t go on like this.

I want to retreat into the cool, quiet space of my office, but several students approach my desk. I field their questions as best as I can. By the time they leave, Charlotte is long gone.

It’s probably for the best.

I leave the room and make a beeline for my office.

“This is why I stay single,” I chide myself. One not-date, and I’m already losing my head.

I turn the corner, and a figure stands by my office door.

“Charlotte.” My breath catches in my throat. “What can I do for you?”

“I’m sorry to bother you,” she begins.

“You could never bother me,” I say without thinking.

Blush colors her cheeks. “I was distracted today,” she stammers. “I didn’t catch much of the lesson. Would you mind going over it with me? It’ll only take a few minutes.”

“Sure.” I open the door to my office for her. I’m hyper-aware of her natural smell of flowers filling my small office as she walks by me. My head spins at the scent.

I step inside. The door slowly swings shut, concealing us in the windowless room.

For what seems like too long, neither of us speaks. I should say something. I should ask her about the information she needs. Anything is better than standing in silence, staring at her like a moron.

“I—” I start, but I don’t get much farther than that. She drops her bag on the floor, closes the distance between us, and her soft mouth is on mine.
