Everett stepped out of the side exit of his hotel just as the sun was rising. As he walked to his car, he noted the dew on the grass, giving evidence to the cool temperatures of the night before, but the clear sky and warming sun promised another beautiful mid-May day. Tossing his jacket into the back seat, he was just about to get behind the wheel when a car raced up behind him, tires squealing. Reflex had him spinning, crouching, and reaching for his gun, which he had tucked behind the waistband of his jeans.
Then his hand stalled on the grip; his jaw clenched. It was Keith’s Jeep that had him blocked, complete with a sweetly smiling Kate at the wheel.
What the hell?
He stared in exasperated disbelief as Kate got out of the car, grabbed her shoulder bag, and then headed toward the passenger side of his rental car. Dressed in navy jeans and a high-neck navy sweater zipped up to her chin, her golden curls wrapped up tightly and held with a clip at the back of her head, she looked like a CIA agent on a mission. Despite his annoyance, he couldn’t discount the fact that her tight-fitting outfit gave her an A+ in the curve department.
“Hi, stranger!” she called to him.
“Are you out of your mind?” he yelled, raising up out of his crouched position and releasing his hand on his gun. “I could have shot you!”
She shook her head. “I’m sure you’re much too well trained for that.”
“Jesus, Kate! What are you doing here?”
“Rather obvious, don’t you think?” she said as she opened the rear door to slide her shoulder bag in the back seat beside his jacket.
“I thought we agreed yesterday—”
“I promised I’d stay clear of Aeromac; I don’t remember actually promising you that I wouldn’t go with you. But, even if I did, I changed my mind. Woman’s prerogative.”
“Kate, we talked about this. You can’t come. It could get dangerous.”
“Looks like, Mr. Everett Larsen, DEA agent, you don’t have a choice.” She stood her ground, those keen blue eyes of hers challenging him over the top of the car. He did a slow burn, going over in his head all the reasons she shouldn’t go with him, the most obvious of which was staring him right in his face—her impulsive, stubborn nature. It could get her into a lot of trouble. Hell, it could get them both into trouble! On the other hand, if he did take her with him, he’d be able to keep an eye on her, which might not be such a bad idea after all.
“Fine, get in. But I want to go on record that I’m not happy about this.”
The brief smile she flashed him lit up her face like sunshine. It didn’t improve his mood.
“Just give me a second to move the Jeep,” she said briskly, and then headed back to pull it out of the way and park it a few spaces down. Everett had half a
