I barely had time to think, oh no, before several of Ilai's guards poured in right behind Tiyisi. In a flash, Tadraa pushed me back towards the other end of the room. The vendor yelled out in fear, stepping in front of us as if to shoo away the intruders.

I didn’t like the man, but his action saved our lives. The guards shot, and the hapless vendor took all the fire, falling to the floor.

It gave us the few extra seconds that we needed to run and duck behind his large desk. Tadraa grabbed a blaster from his own belt and returned fire.

Within moments, the entire space was filled with laser flashes. I crouched down as low as I could, my arms over my head, feeling useless.

Above the sound of blasters and cries from Ilai’s guards after they were hit, I heard Tiyisi shouting. "Cease fire! Cease fire! You mustn’t risk hitting her! Ilai will have your head!”

What about Tadraa, your own brother? I thought, frustrated on his behalf. But at the same time, I realized they wanted to take me alive. I could use that against them.

"Stay down!" Tadraa snapped as I came back up to my knees.

"I want to try something!" Popping my hand up over the desk, I waved it in the air, gritting my teeth in case I lost my limb.

No shots hit my hand. I was right.

"They don’t want to hit me!” I said, standing. "Get behind me!"

Tadraa blinked at me as if I were completely insane, but the guards held their fire when I stood.

Say one thing for Tadraa, he was quick on the uptake. He stood as well, and I did my best to use my body as a shield for him. It was kind of ridiculous because he stood seven feet tall, and I was barely over five feet.

I heard some of the guards scoff in laughter at the front, and I spared them a glare. But they held their fire.

Still hunched, Tadraa stepped to the side and yanked open the back door.

We quickly made our way out, only to run into about ten more guards.

Oh, no wonder the other ones had let us go. They had completely surrounded the place.

Tadraa turned back to me, and our eyes met.

For a moment, I swear I saw the golden glow of the amre within his gaze, even though it was fully covered by his shirt. There was a world of emotion in his eyes.

I didn't want to do this, but I knew that if Ilai got his hands on Tadraa, he would not come out alive.

As for me… Well, I didn't think that anything Ilai had in mind for me would be pleasant, but at the very least, I’d survive to fight another day.

"Go!" I shouted, gesturing to the side.

Tadraa was larger than me, faster and stronger. He had more of a chance of getting away if he didn’t have to worry about me dragging him down.

The torn look in his eyes was something I would never forget.
