I squeeze my hands together as I follow Dr. Salinger out to the waiting room. The second we appear, Beck lurches out of his seat and walks toward us.

“How’s she doing?”

“She’s gunna be fine. Bruised and a little broken, but nothing too serious.”

Beck closes his eyes, tipping his head back. “Thank God for that.”

“Where’s Tane?” I scan the waiting area, taking a seat when the doctor points to a chair in the far corner.

“He just left with Manu’s mum. She was looking kind of shell-shocked, so he offered to go with her.”

“Manu?”

Beck gazes at me for a moment before softly murmuring, “He was driving.”

“What?” My voice is way too loud, but holy hell! Did Beck seriously just say what I think he did?

Why was Manu driving?

And where does April fit into all of this?

I’m about to start spilling out these questions, one after the other, but I don’t have a chance, because the doctor takes a seat adjacent to us and the serious look on his face shuts me up.

“What’s the matter?” I whisper.

Oh no, he’s going to say that he didn’t want to tell me in front of Willow, but she’s actually got major internal damage and probably won’t see out the night.

He scrubs a hand over his mouth, as if he’s not sure where to begin.

My guts start to twist and writhe. I shoot a panicked look to Beck.

Crap! My heart is going to explode.

Shit. Shit. Shit! I can’t hear this!

Beck lays one of his hands over mine, then shoots out his other to the doctor. “Beckett Connell. We haven’t met yet.”

The doctor hesitates, then shakes Beck’s hand. “Dr. Salinger. I, uh… I just wanted a private word with you, before I go back in.”

“Please don’t tell me she’s going to die.” I choke out the words.

The doctor gives me a surprised blink and shakes his head. “No. She’ll recover just fine.”

“No internal damage?”

“None that we’ve discovered.” He points over his shoulder. “I would have told you in there if that was the case. Like I said, we’ll do a thorough examination while we have her here, but no red flags at this stage.”

My body deflates with relief, but I still can’t relax. “Then what… what is it?”

He shifts in his seat, his surprise replaced with worry lines again. Glancing between us, he looks as if he’s trying to read a book he doesn’t quite understand. “I’m sorry. Just first off, how are you related to Willow?” He points at Beck.

“I’m her guardian.”

“Right. And are you, um… How closely do you monitor Willow’s movements?”

“Meaning?” Beck frowns.

The doctor’s tongue darts across his bottom lip. “Were you aware that she was out drinking tonight?”

“Excuse me?” I actually laugh. “Drinking? My sister is not a party girl. She was at her friend’s house for a sleepover.”

The tip of Dr. Salinger’s tongue peeks out between his lips again before he pulls in a breath and knocks me sideways. “I’m not sure where her friend lives, but the car was found on a
