With every step she took on her walk from Bartlett to Church and Fifteenth Street, Sylvia grew less certain what she was going to say to Jules. She was in denial about her feelings. The kiss hadn’t been just good; it had been remarkable. Jules, who was usually so calm and laid back, had turned into an entirely different person. The kiss, when it happened, seemed inevitable, like it had been waiting to happen all along, as though their every encounter had been a step closer to that outcome.

Sylvia imagined what another kiss like that would lead to. She imagined the two of them in bed, naked…

When she’d walked away from Jules that night, it had taken all her willpower. Jules had noticed her response as well as her hasty exit; she wasn’t stupid. Sylvia was sending mixed signals and had to be clear with herself as well as with Jules.

A few nights previously, she hadn’t been able to sleep and had tried a little masturbation, which had always been effective for insomnia. She started touching herself and quickly fantasized what Jules’s body would be like, how her hands and mouth would feel. She was so turned on, she came faster than ever before. Lying in the dark panting, she desperately wished Jules had been touching her.

She stopped in front of Muddy Waters and looked in the window. Jules was already there, sitting on a bench near the back, slouching and staring into the middle distance. She was dressed in her usual faded 501 Levi’s and hooded sweatshirt of plain blue, a couple of shades darker than her jeans. Sylvia felt guilty because Jules looked so down. I’ve gone and confused the hell out of her.

She took a breath and walked in the door and directly to Jules, who looked up as soon as she reached the table. Her glacier-colored eyes looked even lighter indoors. Her expression was wary and tight, so unlike she usually looked. Sylvia felt worse by the second as she stood before Jules’s table.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“I’m going to get a coffee. Do you want anything?”

“Nope. I’m fine.”

After placing her order for her usual mocha, Sylvia returned and sat down across from Jules, who looked at her expectantly.

“Are you okay?” Sylvia asked Jules, for lack of anything better to say, but she was truly concerned.

“Depends.”

“On what?”

“On how this conversation goes.” Jules’s lips were generally relaxed and always seemed on the verge of a smile. This time, her lips were compressed as though she was trying to hold something back. Sylvia had never seen her like this, and it unnerved her.

“I see. Well, I’ll do my best to be as honest as I can.”

“That’s a good place to start.”

Sylvia, stalling for time, asked what she thought was an innocent question. “Did you stay at Toni and Claire’s last night?”

“Yeah. Why do you ask?” Jules was uncharacteristically abrupt.

“No reason. Just a question. Why are you so touchy?” It annoyed Sylvia to think of Jules with Claire and Toni. She fought to stay calm.
