CHAPTER 10

“Get him on the gurney I have set up in the office,” Nole said as he followed Lucca up the steps of their home.

Blessedly, Jari had passed out once more as they drove back to Miracle. Lucca’s heart couldn’t take seeing his mate in so much pain. At least, this way, he was no longer whimpering in pain with every bump, every dip, and every sharp turn the truck had made.

Lucca had growled at Edrick the entire way as his friend drove them back to Miracle. Not that it had been Edrick’s fault. He’d done his best to go slow and not cause any undo jostling, but the road they’d taken needed to be repaved. Considering how many potholes it had, bulldozing it and starting from scratch would be a better solution.

Lucca did as Nole, their resident doctor, ordered. As he entered the house, he strode along the back of the large living room to the hallway that split the house in two. To the right of the hallway was a chef’s kitchen, that’s what Jari had called it when he talked incessantly about being allowed to cook in such a massive space.

The kitchen, along with dining area, took up most of the right side of the house. The only other area on that side was the laundry room at the back of the house. The area left of the hallway was the living room, a bathroom, and two offices, once of which Nole took over to create a small medical area.

It wasn’t large, but since they were shifters and wouldn’t need too much medical care, it was more than adequate.

Reluctant to release Jari from his arms, Lucca forced himself to gently lay his mate on the gurney. A small whimper from Jari nearly had Lucca picking him back up, but he knew he needed to let Nole look at Jari. Instead he reached for his mate’s hand and gave it a squeeze of reassurance.

He smiled when it worked and Jari seemed to calm back down. It gave him hope for their future.

“Damn,” Nole said on an exhale when he got his first good look at Jari.

Lucca couldn’t blame him. His mate was a mess. From the looks of his body, Abdiel had whipped not only his back, but his front, too. There were also other cuts that suggested the knife the alpha had held at Jari’s throat was used to inflict pain on other parts of his body.

The only good thing, if he could say something was good about being tortured, nothing appeared to be too deep that would need stitches to help it heal. As a shifter, Jari would heal relatively quickly, but with the amount of damage done, it would still take several days for all the wounds and bruises to go away.

“Edrick, I’ll need water.” Nole stared at Jari’s battered body and added, “Lots of it.”

Edrick nodded before turning on his heel and striding from the room. Then Nole’s deep brown eyes were staring at Lucca.
