Okay, it’s fine. She won’t mind if I show up.

Jess was beginning to have second thoughts. As she sat back in her seat, her car cooling as she cut the engine, she wondered if she should have called ahead first. It wasn’t the worst idea in the world to surprise Amber, but their lack of conversation as the day progressed made her think twice. Her hands gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles turning white. She’d never been nervous around women but something was causing her to stop and take a moment to think. Perhaps it was the knowledge that just a few days ago, Amber was still engaged, to be married to another woman. Or it could be the fact that they had had little chance to discuss where their relationship was heading. Jess knew that Amber ending her relationship with Kim would require more conversation and discussion with the other woman, but she didn’t want to think about it. Doing so would only churn up that sinking feeling. The anxiety she faced whenever she thought about their relationship had become too much last night as she sat and contemplated, so Jess was trying to clear her mind.

“Will you come over and see me?”

Jess lifted her head from the headrest, her forehead creasing as Amber’s words played over in her mind. “Why am I sitting here?” she muttered to herself. “I should be in there with her.”

Her fingers curled around the door handle, all her worries disappearing. Jess knew exactly why she was here so over thinking it was useless. Of course, Amber wanted her. There was no doubt about it. She’d just left her fiancée for Jess, so no, there was no doubt in her mind at all.

She reached over behind her, took the flowers that lay down on the backseat, and exited her car. Whatever was about to come, whatever the emotions Amber was facing today, Jess was here to have it all lay on her. She always would be. Jess locked her car as she moved up the garden path, closing the gate behind her as she did. Beau’s new toy sat securely in her pocket, a packet of treats accompanying it. Jess released the tension from her shoulders and knocked on the little glass window in the centre of the door, framed by freshly varnished wood.

As the door opened, Jess’ heart broke in her chest. Amber looked defeated. Tired. Lost.

“Hey.”

“Hi.” Amber smiled, stifling a yawn. “Is everything okay?”

“I think I should be the one asking you that…”

“Tired.” Amber forced another smile. “Sorry I haven’t called.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Jess waved off the apology as Beau bound through the hallway, stopping at her feet. “Hey, gorgeous.” Jess glanced down at him. “I hope you’re looking after everyone here.”

“He’s the only one who puts a smile on my face,” Amber admitted. “You know what he’s like. Always doing something stupid.”

“You hear that?” Jess curved her eyebrow, eyeing Beau. “She thinks you’re stupid.”

“He walked into the patio door this morning,” Amber deadpanned.
