XIII.

“It looks fine,” Mason said, aware of his flat tone, and aware Courtney had noticed. He just didn’t have it in him to pretend anymore. The fight had seeped out during the moment Elijah confessed the truth, and he wasn’t going to try to force that man to love him if love wasn’t really there. The apartment smelled fresh—and not really in a good way. The carpets had been cleaned and it all smelled of damp and fresh paint and cleaning chemicals. But it was sprightly looking, and there was a ramp out front of the building to make it easier for Elijah to get in and out. The home-care nursing staff already had a schedule, and Elijah wouldn’t be forced to go through any of this alone.

Mason was ready to bow out, to step back, to let the next few months play themselves out and then say goodbye. He wasn’t a stranger to it. He’d done this before, more than once. He tried to tell himself they’d all felt like a loss, but he wasn’t a good enough liar to pretend like his heart wasn’t breaking. Elijah wasn’t like the others. Again. “I’ve just gathered Mr. Levi from the hospital. He’s inquiring as to whether or not you will be at the apartment when he arrives.”

“No I…no. I have a meeting at the office,” Mason said, not necessarily a lie, there was always a meeting at the office. “I can’t miss it.”

“Sir…”

“Please inform Elijah that Miss Grant will be here to welcome him and have him settled, and the first shift of nursing staff will arrive shortly after. If he’s in need of anything, I’ll inform him that you can provide.”

“Mason,” Bernard said, sounding tired and frustrated.

He felt a wave of irritation at the familiarity of his assistant, but he knew this wasn’t the time. Bernard was more than an assistant—hell, he was more than family. He was the only thing who had remained constant in Mason’s life for the last twelve years, and he was the only one who could get away with being overly familiar. It was why he had to end this. Bernard would force him to see reason, and he couldn’t take that risk. Seeing reason would be
