A little over an hour later, our name was called, and we were told to go to a bank of phones and pick up the first receiver.

The doctor informed me that all had gone well. They’d been able to remove Nattie’s appendix laparoscopically, which would cut down her healing time. Once she woke up and was moved to a room, someone would let us know where we could go to visit her.

My aunt, uncle, and Adrien were all there before that information came. The nurse said only two people could see her because visiting hours were over, and obviously Owen and I would not be those two people, which upset me more than I let on. I wanted to set eyes on Nattie, see for myself that she was okay.

But that would have to wait until the next day. My aunt and uncle hadn’t made any arrangements for where they were going to sleep, but they said they’d figure it out. We offered to let them to stay at our place, but my aunt wasn’t too keen on leaving the hospital anytime soon. Adrien also elected to stay behind. He looked more rattled than I’d ever seen him, and he said he was happy to hang out in the waiting room.

Even though it felt wrong to leave, my aunt insisted we get some rest. Owen led me out of the hospital and into his truck. It was late, probably close to two in the morning, but I felt wired.

Inez was asleep on the couch when we got home, and Roddie was sitting in a nearby chair watching TV. When he noticed us, he grabbed the remote and turned the TV off before giving Inez a gentle shake.

“How is she?” Inez asked groggily.

“The doctor said she’d be okay,” I answered. “Her parents showed up, so we didn’t get to see her.”

“Well, I’m glad she’s okay.”

“Me too,” Roddie added.

I went over and sat beside Inez. “Thank you for checking on her tonight. I don’t even want to think about what might’ve happened if you hadn’t.”

Inez smiled. “Of course. I’m just happy I was here.”

We talked for another couple of minutes before we all headed to bed. Even though my mind was still reeling, my body was exhausted. I quickly undressed before collapsing into bed, allowing Owen to pull me close.

“Tired?” he asked.

I hummed. “Yes and no.”

“Try to get some sleep, and we can head back to the hospital when we wake up.”

I scooted back a little so I could look up at him. “Why are you so wonderful?”

He smiled. “It’s easy to be wonderful to you.”

Returning his smile, I said, “Think Ivanna would say we’re sickeningly sweet too?”

He rested his head against mine and said, “Definitely.”

His embrace was so warm and safe that I slept more solidly than I’d expected. When my phone went off the next morning, I was jerked out of a deep sleep. I reached for my phone and saw my Aunt Ana’s name.

“Hello?”

“I would’ve preferred you let me die than call my mother, Vee.
