The afternoon sun streams through the living room window while I sit on the couch and work on my hand exercises. As I stare at the keyboard in front of me, it’s almost as if it's mocking me. Ha-ha, look at me. Don’t you wish you could play like you used to?

Raina helped me for hours the other night, yet my fingers still fumble and refuse to work. No matter what technique, what stretch, or what trick I try. I’m afraid I’ll need surgery and then recovery, making it a long ass time before I really started playing again. Where would my career be then?

Deep breaths. Focus.

Maybe the surgery isn’t such a bad idea. Otherwise, I could be stuck with fingers that never perform correctly again.

I place my hands on the keys just as I hear the door unlock.

Drew opens the door a second later and looks around in surprise. “Wow, you cleaned?”

I smirk. “Yep. How was your weekend?”

He tosses his bag down next to the door before closing it. “It was okay. Felt good to get away.”

“Did you go home?”

“No. I thought about it, but I headed up north instead.”

“By yourself?”

“Yeah, not far. Just upstate New York, a couple of hours away. I grabbed a hotel room and binged movies and room service.”

“Damn, I need to do that.”

“It’s nice to recharge, man. You should go.”

“Maybe I will.”

Drew sits across from me. “I did a lot of thinking while I was there. And I decided I’m leaving the band.”

“What?” I sit up straighter. “No, Drew, you can’t—”

“It’s done.” He cuts me off. “I already called Brandon.”

No. No. Why?

“Fuck, Drew. Why? Why would you do this?” I try to hold back my anger, swallow it down and push it back where it came from. But I can’t. I won’t let him ruin his career.

“It’s simple. I don’t want in a band you’re not in.”

I scrub a hand down my face. “Thanks, bro, I love you for that and everything you’ve done for me, but why not take the opportunity given to you and run with it? I fucked up my chance twice now, and I can’t keep bringing you down with me. It’s not fair. You deserve better.”

Drew looks down at his lap, then back at me. He shrugs as though it’s no big deal. As if it’s okay that I’ve fucked up his entire life. Yeah, that’s no big deal, right?

No.

He’s the one person who has always had my back. He deserves success and happiness and whatever he wants. I can’t drag him down any longer, and I refuse to.

“I’m with you, no matter what. We started together, and we will finish together.” Drew’s tone is sharp, making his point clear.

Nothing I can say will change his mind. Besides, he’s already walked. What more I can do?

Drew leans forward. “Listen to me, Levi. Let go of any guilt. These are my choices. My choice to never leave your side. I don’t want any part of a band like his. He’s treating you like shit, and besides, Zeke and Pete think they’re better than they are.
