Chapter 10

The pocket watch was not something one could explain over the phone. Gerald always kept Wednesday afternoons open, so he’d arranged to meet with Martin shortly after noon the next day. Marilyn stayed in his guest room that night and using her phone, he’d sent a text to her housekeeper indicating that she wouldn’t be home until the next day.

The meeting went better than he could have hoped. Although initially extremely skeptical, in the end Martin had said, “If nearly anyone else on the planet had come to me with this story, I wouldn’t have believed them. But not only do I respect you, I also respect Gabe Soldani. And the whole situation with Elizabeth Quinn defied conventional knowledge. This story about a magic pocket watch—while appearing nonsensical—does fill in the gaps.”

So, knowing the whole situation, Martin ordered some basic blood tests, an MRI of the brain, a carotid ultrasound to rule out vascular disease, and a basic cardiac workup to rule out valve disease or arrhythmias that might cause an embolic stroke. With a few calls he was able to get them scheduled that afternoon.

Before they left his office Martin said, “We should have all of the test results by tomorrow. Assuming they are all normal, I will make the diagnosis of psychogenic mutism. Normally, at that point, I’d have you follow up with a psychiatrist or psychologist and I’d make some calls for you to ensure you’d be seen right away. But you would probably be better positioned to do that.”

Marilyn frowned.

Gerald smiled at her. “I’m fairly certain that I could get an immediate appointment for her with any number of colleagues. But Marilyn appears concerned.”

She pointed to herself, shook her head and then pointed to her head making circular motions.

Martin laughed. “Well that was pretty clear.”

“Aye, Marilyn, ye aren’t crazy. Sometimes, in order to satisfy those around them who don’t know about the watch, travelers go through the motions of seeking medical care until they return to their own time. ”

She pointed at both of them, then the watch. Shaking her head, she put her hands palms up and shrugged.

Martin nodded. “While it’s true, we both know about the watch, the people close to Marilyn—her family and friends—don’t.” said Martin.

Gerald captured her gaze. She was clearly distressed. “Hmm. Martin, I think I may have an idea about what worries Marilyn. I was the psychiatrist who treated Elizabeth—Elsie as ye now know. She obviously didn’t actually have a mental health issue, but we had to keep up appearances for her family and friends. Even Gabe didn’t know for weeks. And as it turned out, Elsie found it very helpful to be able to talk to someone who knew the truth and could help her understand some things. When I spoke to Elsie last night, she gave her permission to tell ye anything that might be useful, so what I’m about to share isn’t breaking confidentiality. One of the things she found most challenging was pretending to have amnesia.
