Dana came in to work later than usual and walked right past Shelley’s office without stopping to say hello. Keri wasn’t entirely surprised. She’d wondered if Dana would show up at all.

Catching a puzzled look from Shelley, she said, “I’ll check on her,” and followed Dana down the hall.

To her astonishment, before she could catch up, Dana turned and said, “There’s no need to follow me.”

Keri gently reached to touch her arm, uncertain what to say. “Listen. About what happened Saturday—”

“Nothing happened Saturday.” Dana had just closed the subject. Her tone was expressionless and her face was impossible to read.

Keri felt queasy. The walls that had been coming down between them seemed to be back up, even thicker than ever. Taking Dana’s cue and trying to act as if this were just another day at the office, she said, “Okay. So, let me get you some coffee. No, tea. Mild tea. I think I could use some too. Go to your office, sit down and relax. We have a vendors’ meeting coming up, but we can talk about that later.”

“Fine. Please don’t trouble yourself about the tea. I’d like some time to myself this morning.” Dana reached for her door handle.

Accepting the rebuff and the hurt that went with it, Keri turned to leave. She heard a sharp intake of breath and a shocked exclamation. “Shit!” Dana was standing just inside her open door. Keri stared past her and could not believe what she saw.

The office had been trashed. Furniture turned over, papers strewn about, photos that had been on the wall torn to pieces. Someone had spray painted on the wall words of warning: “Bitch” and “Get out!”

Her face ashen, Dana choked out, “Who would do this? Why?”

“I don’t know. But we’ll find out.” Keri walked through the mess to Dana’s desk and picked up the phone, instructing, “Shelley, call the police. And get security up here.”

Dana was still rooted to the spot. “I can’t believe this. Is it about me?”

“Probably not.” Keri was searching for a logical explanation. “It’s more likely to be about me.”

“The security cameras.” Dana swept a look toward the hall. “They’ll show who it was. I’ll go down there now and—”

“No.” Keri stopped her with a hand on her arm. She didn’t want Dana anywhere near something that might be dangerous. “Let’s wait until the police arrive. Go to my office. I’ll be there in a minute.”

Dana seemed reluctant, but finally said, “Okay. I guess they won’t let us clean up or anything. They’ll be checking for fingerprints.” She was talking too quickly, her mouth trembling.

Keri longed to put her arms around Dana and comfort her, but after the run-in with Kronerberg, she knew better than to try it. “Please. Go have some coffee and something to eat. You look like you need it.”

Dana was numb. She’d cried most of the weekend, berating herself at her own stupidity for believing Keri could be interested in her for anything more than a fling or someone to laugh at.
