The next morning, Rebecca got up early to make the batter for pancakes, chop fruit and lay the table for breakfast; by the time she came downstairs again after helping Jasmine get ready for nursery, Saskia was in the kitchen and had made coffee.

‘Here you, go, Big Sis,’ Saskia said, handing Rebecca a mug of coffee just the way she liked it.

‘Angel. Thank you.’ Rebecca heated oil in the pan and busied herself cooking pancakes while Jasmine poured a glass of milk with Saskia’s help.

‘Where did you go last night, Mummy?’ Jasmine asked.

‘I went to the pop-up cinema with a friend from work.’

Jasmine looked confused, ‘What’s a pop-up cinema?’

‘It’s a cinema outside in the park,’ Rebecca explained.

‘That sounds so cool. Can I go with you next time? Please?’ Jasmine added swiftly.

‘It’d be a bit too late for you, darling. You’d be asleep before the film had started.’ At the disappointed look on Jasmine’s face, she said, ‘But I read there’s going to be a floating pop-up cinema in the summer, showing films every morning. Maybe we can do that.’

‘If it’s The Little Mermaid, I’m so coming with you,’ Saskia said. She broke into a chorus of ‘Part of Your World’, and Jasmine joined in.

‘We’ll make it a girly day,’ Rebecca promised, ‘and take Nanna with us.’

‘Can we have popcorn?’ Jasmine asked, spooning fruit onto her pancakes.

‘Absolutely. Or we can make a special picnic,’ Rebecca said.

‘Did you have popcorn last night?’ Jasmine asked.

‘No. But we did have hot chocolate. Now, finish your pancakes and go and clean your teeth,’ Rebecca directed.

‘I’m glad you had a good time last night,’ Saskia said when Jasmine had gone upstairs to clean her teeth.

‘I did—and thank you for making it possible.’

‘So are you seeing him again?’

Rebecca nodded. ‘Though we’re taking it slowly. I don’t want to make the same mistake I did with Lucas.’

‘Sensible,’ Saskia agreed.

Between them, they cleared up in the kitchen; then Rebecca hugged her sister goodbye at the front door, took Jasmine to nursery and headed to work.

The day was incredibly busy, with ward rounds and two full clinics, so she didn’t get to see Nathaniel, even briefly. Though she called him later that evening, after Jasmine had gone to sleep.

‘Hey. Had a good day?’ he asked.

‘I did. I thought you’d like to know, Mrs Ridley was in my clinic today,’ she said. ‘The baby’s still head-down, so hopefully she’ll get the birth she wants.’

‘As much as a baby will let its mum plan a birth,’ he said, and she could practically hear the smile in his voice.

‘How was your day?’ she asked.

‘Clinic, and a mum who got to five centimetres dilated at the end of my shift—so I’ll miss out on the birth,’ he said.

‘But you can still get your baby cuddle if she’s on the ward tomorrow,’ she said. ‘About breakfast on Friday—I need to take Jasmine to nursery, first. Can I meet you at nine at the bus stop outside the park?’
