Chapter Fifteen

I flew backward, flailing until I realized Asher was holding me from behind. Taka held Caine in his chair by pressing down on his shoulders.

Asher turned me to face him, his gaze searching mine. “Did he hurt you?”

Had the strange blue desert and carousel been real or a dream? “No.” I shook my head and skirted Asher. Caine was once again clean-shaven. In fact, he appeared exactly the same as before I’d slipped into the blue reality, except for the alertness in his sentinel eyes and his subtle wink that let me know it hadn’t been a delusion.

“Are we done here, then?” Asher glared at the other sentinel, nodding to Taka when Caine went back to staring out the window and stroking his locket.

What was I supposed to say? If I tried to explain what had happened to us, it would move me one more step toward the crazy door. “I guess so,” I said.

“Back to Kyle’s, then?” Asher said something low to Taka on our way by him, but I was too anxious to talk to Baku to listen.

We are left with one avenue, Baku said, and there are too many eyes at Kyle’s.

To search Adaline’s memories, he meant. God, I can’t believe I’m stuck conspiring with you of all people. I agreed with him, though.

I shook my head at Asher, who’d moved closer while waiting for me to answer. “I’m kind of tired, and you’ve already got everyone working on it. I think I’d like to have a bath and do some reading to take my mind off things.” I crossed my arms and twisted away when he reached for my face.

He raised a brow, hurt radiating from the soft lines of his jaw, but I went out the door and feigned interest in the lake. Nothing to see here. “Did you know about Sampson’s brother?” I asked when he fell in beside me, and we headed for our cabin. Although I had an insane urge to run, I forced myself to walk. If I kept him talking about other things, he wouldn’t try to talk about us or why I couldn’t stand the thought of him touching me right now. It wasn’t because of what he’d said. I wasn’t afraid of loving him, I just knew it wasn’t going to last, and it would be easier on everyone this way.

“Yeah, but only because your dad mentioned it to me this morning, and after their talk, he thought Sampson needed a little R&R. Not that he’d consider it with things the way they are.”

I should have felt like a shit that Dad was doing my job, but my mind was bent around the memories I needed access to. How did one look for a metaphysical vault containing memories of a past life? It wasn’t like I had an instruction manual for my stupid brain.
