Chapter 13

It’s the beginning of June and I’m sitting on my bed, my laptop screen glowing ominously in front of me, and I close my eyes and wish I was back in Houston with Maya and D’andre. It was just a quick weekend trip, but it had been so much fun. They have the cutest apartment together and D’andre is in college for engineering while Maya studies to be a nurse. She’s also put her high school cheerleading skills to work and just got hired to be a real live cheerleader for the Houston Texans football team. Seeing her official uniform and how excited it made her was the coolest thing ever. Now, Jett and I will get free tickets to the football games to watch her in action.

I love going to other sporting events that aren’t motocross. Jett doesn’t get recognized as often when we’re surrounded by people who are obsessed with football instead of dirt bikes. It’s like we get to be a normal couple for once.

I would love to be a normal couple right now.

I stare at my laptop screen and something odd occurs to me. If I close the laptop, all the drama goes away. If I pretend the internet doesn’t exist, then I’d be normal. At least I would be normal in my own house. I almost reach my hand up and do just that—slam the laptop closed and pretend it solved all my problems.

But it won’t.

Because even though the things that hurt me are on the computer, they’re still a part of real life.

Over the last month, the online speculation about my wedding with Jett has grown into a monster of lies and drama. Tons of motocross fans (can you guess which gender?) think I’m “knocked up” and that Jett is marrying me out of some kind of gentlemanly obligation.

The other rumors are swirling around calling me some trashy girl from the streets who must have found a way to blackmail Jett into marrying me. Like, what? What kind of blackmail do they think I have on the boy? He was raised in the spotlight since his dad is the famous Jace Adams, and people in this sport have known Jett his whole life. What secret could he possibly have that I somehow figured out to hold over his head and force him to marry me?

People are such jerks. They just can’t accept that Jett wants to get married at a perfectly legal age of twenty, to a perfectly nice person – me. Jett tells me not to let it get to me, but it does. He says I should just stay off social media and motocross websites until they all find something else to gossip about, but I can’t. I still wake up every morning and check my computer like I’m some kind of gossip addict. I just have to see what they’re saying about me. To be honest, I’m also worried that maybe one day the gossip won’t just be gossip. I’m worried that one day, whatever bad thing they post about me will somehow be true.
