CHAPTER 7
Jean walked into the apartment, surprised that Rod hadn't come home yet. Usually, he considered his day done by four or four-thirty. Right now, though, he was riding high on the knowledge that Holly would be in town tomorrow. In a way Jean wished Holly wasn't coming in right now, much as she looked forward to seeing her sister. She knew Holly. Rod might convince her to lend him a hand, but minutes after she'd forget all about it. It wasn't Holly's fault—she was made that way. Maybe that was part of the reason for her swift success. But to Rod it would be a kick in the stomach to be promised and then disappointed.
Jean climbed out of her office clothes into a sweater and slacks, then went into the kitchenette to start dinner. She was so tired of this same deadly routine. At least, the apartment had been without its stream of visitors this past week, she remembered, amazed. Nobody had been up. They hadn't even seen or talked with Lee. Was Lee angry about Rod's ridiculous behavior, she wondered, disturbed. Lee was the one person in the lot of them that was worthwhile.
"I just saw your pal," Rod's voice at the door caught her by surprise.
"Who?" She turned about to face him.
"Lee. She was shopping in the delicatessen down at the corner. I told her to drop by later. Sore?" he asked, faintly mocking. He was on his good behavior this week, Jean recognized.
"No." She smiled calmly. "I like Lee." Her eyes lingered on his face, losing their calmness. "Wipe off the lipstick. It doesn't become you."
Rod's eyes flickered in annoyance. "I was rehearsing a scene. We're doing an audition next week."
"Nadine and you?" It was useless to let anger overtake her, Jean warned. Why should she care what Rod did? He meant nothing to her physically—did he? Then what was she doing here, the truant question arose again. Why didn't she have the common sense, the guts, to pack up and leave?
"Yeah, Nadine and I." Belligerency soared to the surface. "What's this jealous wife bit, all of a sudden? It isn't the first time I've had an actress smear me with lipstick."
"You two were a spectacle the last time Lee was here." They were a spectacle before Lee came, Jean corrected herself mentally. "The way she sprawled out there with nothing under her dress but that oversexed body—and you with your eyes seeing nothing else. It was a great big joke to Nadine!" She choked, ashamed of her anger. Dumb little Jean, who could be used by any handsome man, she blamed herself. Dennis had been no good, too—and she'd cried herself to sleep for months over him. Lee would never be that way, she thought. Lee would have contempt for any man who behaved so rottenly—she could see that in Lee's eyes when they looked at Rod.
"You're nuts." Rod reverted to sullenness. It wasn't the time to fight with her, he must have decided, Jean told herself.
