Excited to speak to her mother, Alicia grabbed Brad's arm and hurried towards the church. She opened the double doors and her jaw dropped as she walked inside. It was not much like she remembered it being when she was a child, so the place of worship had clearly been under serious renovation. The wine red carpet was a nice change from the old, beige, stained carpet that had been laid out around the building throughout her childhood.

“Looks pretty different in here,” she murmured.

Brad nodded, putting his hands in his pockets.

“You haven't been here in awhile,” he said. “Looks a lot nicer than it used to.”

“Yeah it does,” she replied. She then frowned and asked, “Do you see my mother anywhere?”

There were a handful of churchgoers wandering around the main hall, walking in and out of the chapel and speaking to each other before the service started. Alicia noticed Walt shaking hands with people out of the corner of her eye and she decided that she would just ask him where her mother had went.

As she walked towards Walt, she noticed that Brad was not following her and she frowned a little. She realized that they could not flaunt their relationship in front of everyone, but she at least wanted him nearby to support her. Frankly, she found his lack of concern a little rude, but that was not going to stop her from seeing her mother.

A middle-aged couple with several children tugging on their father's pant leg trudged away from Walt after having a short conversation with him. Once he saw Alicia, he beamed and reached out to hug her.

“Li-Li! So glad to see that you two could make it!” he exclaimed, embracing her. “First time you've been here since the renovations. Lookin' pretty good around here, huh?”

“Yeah, it looks great,” Alicia murmured. “Earl said that he saw my mom in here. Where did she go? Is she in the bathroom or something? I haven't seen her anywhere.”

Walt frowned and shook his head.

“Sorry, Li. Your mother didn't come along. Earl must have been mistaken,” he replied. “He is getting a bit older so don't hold it against him, okay?”

Alicia sighed. She knew that it was unlikely that her mother would have been feeling well enough to attend church, but Earl had gotten her hopes up when he told her that he saw her inside. Her heart fell a little bit when she realized that the church visit had done very little good for her. At that moment, she just wanted to go back to the city and run away from her hometown problems. Unfortunately for her, she knew that that was not an option.

“That's okay,” she murmured, trying not to sound too disappointed. “How was she feeling this morning?”

Walt rolled his eyes and muttered, “Li, sorry, but I have to take care of the church folk today. If you want to see your mother later, you can come on over to the house after church and see her.”

Alicia scoffed and walked away with her arms crossed.
