Chapter Eight
David was late on Tuesday morning. He told himself it was the perk of the job to have a lie-in, but that didn’t stop his guilt trip when he remembered exactly what he had been doing at four o’clock that morning.
The day started badly with a call to attend the President’s office. Randolph Lawrence was an okay guy, even if he was uptight and anal. In his sixties and married with no children, David knew he looked upon him as the son he had never had. He also knew he was in line to take over when Randolph retired, but at the moment, he wasn’t sure he was in a rush for that to happen. The stress of the job was too much for him. Maybe if his extracurricular activities didn’t put additional pressure on him, he might have been able to concentrate on his work better, but for now, all he could think about was his need for Jeremy, work be damned.
There was coffee already waiting for him on the table when he entered his boss’s office. Randolph always condescended to sit on the sofa and drink coffee with him when he met with David. He didn’t come out from behind the desk for anyone else. He gave David a blinding smile. His boss was addicted to coffee and had his teeth whitened on a regular basis as a result.
“So,” Randolph said when he’d taken a good slug of caffeine and a bite of a handmade Belgian chocolate biscuit, “Havers says you were great fun at his Halloween party.”
David didn’t remember anything of the sort. He just remembered hiding his hard-on with his cloak all night after his thwarted attempt to fuck Jeremy in the pantry. He drank some coffee and said nothing.
“He’s having another get-together this weekend, and he wants you there. He says you don’t need to bring a companion because he will provide the entertainment.”
David stared at his boss. Slowly, he felt his face heat. Did Randolph know? Was he in cahoots with Havers? What did this offer mean? It sounded sinister, whatever it was.
“I’ll be there too, plus another few members of the board,” Randolph said, not appearing to notice David’s discomfort.
David nodded slowly. He felt struck dumb. He didn’t want to go alone. He wanted the reassuring comfort of a beautiful woman from the agency by his side, not a promise of something else at Havers’s mansion. It was true rumours circulated about Havers and what went on at his parties. Certainly, David hadn’t seen anything amiss on Halloween, but then he doubted he would have noticed if all the guests had been naked and indulging in an orgy, such was his preoccupation with Jeremy that night. It was said, at some of Havers’s wilder parties, he catered for all his guests’ tastes without exception. And not only with the food.
David shivered. He didn’t want his tastes catered for at a party with his boss and business colleagues in attendance, thank you very much.
