Could you tell my waitress to make my garden salad a half order?” The request had come from a girl the size of an emery board.
Sophie finished filling her glass from the pitcher of icy cucumber water. “That’s all you’re going to eat for lunch?” She knew she sounded like a nagging mother, but something had to be said.
“I just had three almonds,” the girl informed her, eyes fixed on her Treo. She was so thin her collar bones jutted like coat hangers through her thin jersey top. “I’m, like, stuffed.”
“One green leaf, coming up.” Sophie was slightly satisfied to see that the stick figure’s lunch companion, a twenty-something guy dressed in the ultra-shabby manner particular to extremely wealthy young people in LA, was checking out her own ample butt. Let the fashion magazines say what they wanted. Men liked a little somethin’somethin’ down there.
She headed back to the hostess stand, where several parties were waiting to be seated. It was the middle of the lunch rush at Mojito, and the terrace was filled with the usual combination of pouting figure-free models, power-suited businessmen, and attractive up-and-coming actors. She made sure to keep her shoulders back and boobs out, just in case anyone who was anyone was there to discover
“What’d he do?”
Sophie was grateful they were letting her sit at the table, but not so grateful she was going to spice up their lunch with her humiliating tale. “It’s too awful to talk about.” She shook her head in despair.
Spectacles handed over the untouched glass of Chardonnay she’d ordered with lunch. “Drink this. You’ll feel better.”
Sophie sipped the wine, studiously avoiding eye contact with Trey or the rest of his group of acolytes. She was vaguely aware that had the situation been less dire, this would be a perfect opportunity to pitch herself as the next star of the CW. But chitchat, even about her career, wasn’t on her agenda at the moment. The women had been given their bill, so they’d be leaving soon, and she’d go with them. Once she was safe from Trey, she’d take refuge in the kitchen until he was gone.
Expensive Haircut gasped. “He’s heading this way! Look natural!”
Sophie tilted her head back and laughed as if the TV executive had said something incredibly witty. She looked anything but natural, but it was the best she could do. “You are so hi-larious!”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Trey et al walking toward them. Apparently, he wasn’t satisfied with the usual celebrity spot and needed his own special table. She desperately wanted to look away as he came fully into her line of vision, but her eyeballs weren’t taking commands from her brain.
In moments, their eyes would meet. Sophie could imagine the fake apology speech he’d issue, begging for her forgiveness, promising to call, blah, blah, blah. She almost wanted the confrontation. It would feel good to give him her patented “you don’t exist in my world” stare before she turned back to her high-powered new best friends and toasted them with her goblet of borrowed wine.
