Chapter 27

Liza slows her pace. We let the rest of our group move ahead. “Did you see the shadows when we entered the back area?”

My stomach drops. “Uh, no.”

She continues to whisper even though the rest of the group is out of earshot. “I couldn’t figure out if it was multiple spirits or the same one on a rapid loop.”

“I don’t understand.”

She pulls me in close with her left arm and puts her mouth to my ear. I’m not sure who she thinks is listening. “Human shadows. But about fifteen quickly across the right-hand wall when we first entered the back. Then they scaled the wall, floated across the ceiling, and went out a door.”

I pull back so I can look her in the eye. “I didn’t see anything.”

She shrugs. “And I didn’t hear what you heard. And neither of us felt a cold spot.”

I can’t swear to that. I was so overcome by the power of the thrumming noise maybe it caused me to miss the shadows. Perhaps it distracted me, so I missed feeling a cold spot, too.

“There is something strong here. But I don’t feel any malicious intent,” Liza says.

Unlike Liza, I’ve never been able to discern if a spirit has malicious intent or not. People yes, spirits not so much. Consequently, I assume all ghosts are ticked off about not moving to the next plane and are subject to being malicious at any point.

My paradigm makes me uncomfortable. Our team has not unpacked our gear yet, so our weapons are still in the van. “Let’s catch up with the rest of them,” I say.

“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea,” Liza agrees as she pulls away from me.

As we catch up with the rest of the group, Dusty raises his eyebrows at me. I give him a brief nod of the head to let him know that yes, we probably have a live subject site.

The hallway makes a U-shape bend behind the screen, and we come out to the other side of the stage. As we walk back up the lower-level seating, Heather explains her position once again.

“The city has recently increased property taxes on commercial buildings. More accurately, they revalued all the properties in the downtown square. My family has owned this building since the thirties. With the increase in taxes, we have to either find a viable business for it or give it back to the city.” She exhales loudly. “We’re sort of over a barrel right now. I’ve got $90,000 already dumped into remodeling. If I can’t get my crews back in here to finish the job and get this building up and running for the events we have scheduled for the first week of January, I’m done. So, I hope you see that time is of the essence.”

“I understand your concern Ms. White,” Dusty begins. “I assure you my team will do everything we can to confirm what’s happening with your facility. If you don’t mind, I need to meet with my team so that we can develop a plan for the investigation.
