CHAPTER 16

KINGSTON

“So, how long have you and Reign been screwing?”

I threw a glare over my shoulder at Jax before returning my attention to the grill. Reign insisted on having a barbecue before the summer came to an end. Unable to deny her anything, I went along with it. The entire crew was here. It was the first party she had thrown at her house since her divorce. It was also the first time our friends knew for sure that we were together. Some were handling it better than others.

“You’re just going to ignore me, King?”

Sighing, I threw down my tongs and faced Jax, Marcus, and Carter. The sun was setting slowly behind the three assholes who were smirking at me. I could hear Reign’s laughter through the open window.

Stepping closer to the men, I lowered my voice to avoid being overheard. “Reign and I are in a relationship. Don’t talk about her like she’s one of your hoes.”

“Whoa!” Jax said, throwing his hands in the air. “I was just joking. What’s up your ass?”

Marcus opened his mouth—probably to make some dumb joke. My glacial stare made him clamp his lips shut. Even the normally unfazed Carter was eyeing me with caution.

I ran a hand through my long hair and tried to get my runaway emotions under control. It wasn’t their fault that I was in a constant state of guilt and lust. “Nothing’s wrong with me. I just don’t want Reign to feel weird about this. It’s taken a lot for us to get to this point and she’s still a little shaky.”

“Is it Lucas?” Carter asked. “I heard about what happened at Mama Shirley’s.”

A smile flitted across my face before I squashed it. Just thinking about the beautiful way Reign came apart at the dinner table had my dick growing.

“Naw, it’s not Lucas. I couldn’t give two fucks about him. He already knows he don’t want it with me.”

“What I don’t understand is why now?” Marcus asked in between sips of his beer.

I flipped the ribs on the grill and took a moment to think about his question. It was hard to explain something that had been held deep in the recesses of your heart. Hell, it was just starting to make sense to me and I had known this woman my entire life.

Before I could answer, Jax put his two cents in and shocked us all. “Here’s the thing…sometimes you don’t realize how special something is when it’s in front of you day in and day out. You certainly don’t realize it when it belongs to someone else and you are focused on your own life. Sometimes all it takes is one moment for your eyes to open and see what’s been there all along.”

“Is the food ready yet?”

Alexandra and her big belly waddled out to the patio and scared us all. We didn’t even hear her coming. The rest of the ladies filed out onto the patio with their hands filled with side dishes. Soon we were
