Chapter Five
#xa0;
James
Ronnie’s flat was the same layout as mine, so it was easy enough to walk into his kitchen and stick the kettle on while he jumped in the shower. I supposed doing something mundane and normal like that was his way of pretending that everything was all right. It wasn’t, not by a long shot, but it could be if he learned to manage his power and didn’t use it in crowded places.
Hark at me, expert on people with hidden powers.
I thought of other superheroes, the way they wore capes and form-fitting outfits, and laughed a bit at how ridiculous Ronnie would look in one of those get-ups. A mask—now that would be funny, but I didn’t think he was in the right frame of mind to talk about that sort of thing at the moment. To laugh about it. Not only did he have the horror of the woman’s predicament to deal with—and what could have occurred if we hadn’t been around—but also the enormity of his condition, for want of a better word.
While I made some coffee, I thought of the woman and hoped she’d be able to seek some help that would go some way to healing her. Christ, that man deserved everything he had coming to him. I hoped that other bloke who had called the police would—
Fuck that. I had to make sure that thug had the book thrown at him. I couldn’t rely on the drunk fella passing on the right information. He might not even know what had really been going on.
A pad and a pen were wedged between a packet of biscuits and the toaster. I scribbled a note to Ronnie that I wouldn’t be long, then took the filled mugs into his living room. Setting them on the small table in front of his sofa, I took a deep breath and left the flat, going outside into the cold and finding it oddly soothing. At the bottom of our road was a phone box, not something seen much these days, but it was there all right and once inside I lifted the handset and dialed the police.
I shook when a woman answered and asked which service I required, but I wasn’t doing anything wrong so why it felt as though I was didn’t make sense. Maybe because I intended my call to be anonymous. After babbling out the location of the abduction and that I’d seen the man drag the woman away, and what I thought he’d had in mind, I slammed the phone down then raced back to Ronnie’s, feeling as if the police could see me, even though that was impossible.
Back in Ronnie’s living room, out of breath, I plonked myself down on the sofa, leaned my head back and closed my eyes. It had happened, hadn’t it? All of it? We’d gone from snogging in one alley to confronting an abuser in another. We’d teleported out of there after Ronnie had thrown out some weird-arsed light, then we’d come home and I’d made a secret phone call.
