Kevin lay back on the lounger. He didn’t want to eavesdrop on Logan’s phone call, but he couldn’t erase the memory of the worried look on Logan’s face when Consuela had announced the call. He started to get antsy when several minutes went by and Logan hadn’t returned. He got off the lounger and strolled over to the French doors. He could hear Logan’s voice, tense and angry, and see him pacing back and forth across the living room floor, one hand raking through his curls with obvious frustration.
Shit, it’s important all right —and bad news from the looks of it.
He’d never seen Logan like this. Even after having an ice-cold drink dropped in his lap he’d retained his cool and his sense of humour, but now his face was set in hard, grim lines, and Kevin could hear snatches of the conversation, things like, “How dare they?” and “I’ll fucking sue all their evil, conniving asses.”
Eventually he hung up, but immediately punched in a number on the phone. “Steve?” he rasped. “Get the plane ready and ask the tower for a takeoff within two hours. We’re going back to Portland, pronto!” Without turning to look at Kevin, he marched out of the living room and Kevin could only suppose he was going up to the bedroom to pack. He scurried after him, taking the stairs two at a time.
“What’s wrong, Logan?” he asked as he ran into the bedroom.
“Everything!” Logan all but snarled. “Every fucking thing.” He threw a suitcase on the bed then started piling his clothes into it.
“Let me do that,” Kevin said, getting the other suitcase out of the closet.
“Kevin…” Logan’s expression still retained traces of his anger. “I’m afraid I’m not going to be very good company for a while. Pack your own things and call the limo round. Tell Consuela we’re leaving and that I’ll be in touch, hopefully soon.”
“Okay.” Kevin had the nasty feeling he had just been relegated back to the rank of employee rather than friend, or lover, or whatever it had been. He picked up his backpack and shoved the few clothes he’d brought inside. He couldn’t help it, but tears were stinging his eyes. He wanted to go to Logan, wrap him in his arms and kiss away that stormy expression, but from the look of Logan’s body language at that moment, he knew it would be an unwise move.
Slinging his backpack over his shoulder he left the bedroom and ran down the stairs to find Consuela. She took the news with a knowing nod and a sad cast to her eyes.
“Cuide de él,” she said, kindly. “Que es un hombre bueno, y usted es bueno para él.”
“Gracias, Consuela. El es un hombre muy bueno.”
They hugged then he went to buzz through to Alfredo the limo driver’s apartment and told him they were leaving immediately.
While he waited he remembered Consuela’s words. ‘He is a good man, and you are good for him’.
He’d thought that too. Well, at least the
