Chapter 6

We were in Cadan’s car after my mini-meltdown heading to Alpha Peter’s pack lands. I had explained that while I did want Brad in trouble for potentially putting Cadan in harm’s way if the cats freaked out over his wolf scent, it was more than that. Peter was our ally, and the right thing to do in paranormal society was to approach the leader of the group for any transgressions the members committed.

Plus, it was also an unwritten rule that if anyone even remotely drew attention to the fact that they were different and could blow their cover, it was to be reported. Cadan listened to me as he followed the directions I gave, nodding along until I was done.

“So basically you’re going to Peter to tell him you saw one of his cubs run out into a busy street without looking both ways. It’s not about getting him in trouble. But if that cub doesn’t understand or have it corrected, he could hurt himself or the people around him.”

I had to mull over that analogy a moment. “Yes, that’s pretty accurate. But also add to that if the kid was running around with grenades strapped to him. He goes down. He could take a lot of us with him.”

“In that way you’re covering your ass as well.”

“And my family’s,” I agreed.

“Okay, I’m on board then. It makes sense.” He looked relieved,

the lines on his face smoothing out. “I was a little nervous about walking into the wolves’ den and snitching. But I think I get the politics now.”

“It’s surprising to me always that I understand it. I do well with

rules when they make sense to me. It’s more when emotions get involved or people have some form of endgame that I find I’m lost.” “There’s another part to that I don’t think you consider when you talk about yourself that way,” he said gently as he covered the hand I had resting casually on my thigh with his. “You don’t give yourself credit for being strong enough to say you don’t understand something. People are a lot more confused than you think, Button. Most just don’t have the balls to be honest and admit it.”

“Huh, you’re right. I never thought about that.” The idea made me smile. I liked that he thought I was a strong person. I couldn’t help but start to see myself through Cadan’s eyes after the way we’d been talking. The positive light he saw me in helped soothe some of the old emotional and mental wounds I carried.

“Just pull up to the front of the house and get out slowly. They always have wolves guarding the property so they’ll come check us out. But shifters are sentient in their wolf form, so they won’t react like normal wolves. And they can smell emotions. So they’ll want to take in our scent and make sure that we don’t mean harm.”

“They won’t eat me, right?” he asked, starting to look a little nervous.

“I’m the only one who gets to bite you,” I purred as he parked the car.
