She had stood before him naked, pulling his face to her belly, and for moments he had rested there feeling the softness of her skin. He could still smell her scent, sharp and tangy like limes.

He raided the mini-bar and paced his room at the Relais Christine, waiting for the phone to ring, his lawyer’s mind straining to bring some order to the chaos of events. He struggled to concentrate on what he had learned about Flint, attempting to push away images of the girl; pushing away, too, the resonant snap of a spring-loaded stiletto emerging from its housing.

Which is not to say that he succeeded.
