The outdoor rink is busy, even though the weather is far above freezing. Parker grabs his skates, the laces tied together, and drapes them over his shoulder, then hands me wrist protectors, knee pads, gloves, and a scarf. He looks at my feet and digs in his bag, passing me a big ball of socks. Holding hands, we walk to the ticket booth, where he rents me a pair of skates and pays for an hour on the ice.

It’s going to be a long hour.

After helping me get into my skates, tightening the laces so my “ankles are stable,” he helps me walk to the ice. I feel like the dog with roller skates on its paws. I can hardly stay upright.

Parker shows me multiple times how to stand up because I keep falling, then how to skate forward—which was harder than I expected. I still spend more time on my butt on the ice than skating, but eventually it clicks. I’m not able to do any triple salchows—at least on purpose—but I find my balance, and I’m able to at least go around the rink, although I’m sure it’s not a pretty sight with my arms stretched wide and my feet farther apart than my shoulders. There are no easy glides for me.

Parker, on the other hand, looks like a pro as he skates around me, and when it looks like I might fall, he’s there to catch me. I’m in awe of him skating on one foot, then on two feet both frontward and backward.

“Were you born with ice skates on your feet?”

“Nope, but I started playing hockey when I was three, and I was on club teams at Illini and Chicago.”

“I’m making you look bad.” I lose my footing and crash down on my butt. We both get a serious case of the giggles. “Just to warn you, I can take you at pool.”

“Swimming? I can do a serious breaststroke.”

“No, billiards! I’ll take you down with a game of 8-ball.”

“Then we’ll play men against women tonight with Elizabeth and my buddy Tom. I’ve known him since sixth grade.

My jeans are soaked from falling on the ice and the cold temperature outside. Time seems to pass slowly, but glancing at the clock over the booth, I see it’s been barely forty-five minutes.

Parker wraps an arm around me. “Your teeth are chattering. Let’s get you dried off.”

“But we have fifteen more minutes.”

He helps me off the ice, then sits me down and helps me out of my skates. I feel much better on firm ground.

“I grabbed these clothes from Elizabeth. They may be a little big, but I think they’ll fit and you’ll be dry.” He points to the ladies’ room, and I quickly peel myself out of my jeans. I’m not sure if my legs blue from bruises or the cold, but I suspect the latter.

When I emerge from the restroom, Parker asks, “How are you feeling?”

“I’m much warmer, so that’s a start.”

“Great. There’s a soup and sandwich place in walking distance.
