CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The moonlight seeped through the branches of the trees, casting eerie shadows on the ground. The man paused at the edge of the woods, his breath shallow and controlled. He took in the sight of the house before him - an old structure with weathered walls, its windows like dark, hollow eyes staring back at him.

He approached the house cautiously, each footfall slow and deliberate, as if he were treading on thin ice. The gravel crunched beneath his boots, threatening to betray his presence, but he forced himself to remain calm. With every step, he imagined himself becoming an extension of the darkness around him, blending seamlessly into the night.

As he neared the house, he kept his body low, using the cover of darkness and shadows to remain hidden from view. A light flickered on inside, casting an unsettling glow through one of the windows. The man held his breath, watching for any sign of movement. His heart pounded in his chest, but he willed it to quieten down.

With careful precision, he crept closer to the window, his every muscle tense and ready to spring into action should the need arise. He spotted a bush just below the sill, its leaves casting erratic shadows on the ground. It was the perfect cover.

The crunch of leaves beneath his feet sounded deafening in the quiet night, but he reminded himself that it was likely imperceptible from inside the house.

His heart thudded wildly in his chest as he peered through the branches, his line of sight clear and unobstructed. The figure moved about within the room, unwittingly inviting the man to observe and document their actions. He could feel sweat dampening his brow, the tension palpable in the air around him.

She moved with such grace and poise...

The pattern was life... the pattern was everything.

And she would fit it marvelously.

The figure inside the house paced back and forth, their silhouette casting eerie shadows against the drawn curtains. The unnamed man's pulse quickened in tandem with each step taken by the figure, his breaths growing shallow as he strained to hear any hint of conversation from within.

As if responding to a silent plea, the figure paused for a moment, their head tilted as though listening to something. The man's heart raced, his mind buzzing with questions like a swarm of bees. What was going through this person's head? Did they know what was about to happen?

The room suddenly filled with the muffled sound of a ringing phone, causing the figure to spring into action. They hurriedly crossed the room, snatching the phone from its resting place on a nearby table.

"Hello?" the figure answered, their voice barely audible through the glass pane separating them from the man outside.

"Who is it?" the man thought, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. "What are they saying?"

"Of course," the figure continued, their tone cheerful. "I understand. I'll take care of it tomorrow, thanks Amy."

"Take care of what?" the man wondered, his curiosity piqued. He felt the seconds slipping away, each one bringing him closer to the point of no return.
