Six Months Ago
The large, crimson and cream envelope sets on my vanity, untouched. The longer I stare at it, the more certain I am that this is right. I wasn't sure at first. Heck, I'm still not, but there's something inside of me that screams, begging me to open it. The problem is: I'm a chicken, a big, fat chicken that is clucking around the coop in circles unable to make up its mind to come in out of the rain. I don't like feeling lost because it's not something I'm used to dealing with. If I'm ever indecisive about something, I talk to my momma or Mary Lou, but I can't share this, not yet.
What if the answer is no?
Or what if the answer is yes?
God, I'm so conflicted and ...lost.
It's time to woman up. There's no reason to let something like ink and paper paralyze me this way. So what if the answer is no? It's not like I'm wasting away here in Freemont, no, not at all. I enjoy my life. My best friend is here. My boyfriend is here. My whole family is here. I like it. Really, I do. So, who cares if one stupid review board doesn't think I'm good enough? Not me, or do I? I do care. That's the problem. I also care if the answer is yes because, then, I'll have to tell my momma that I went behind her back to send in the application in the first place, and I don't know how to have that conversation.
Maybe it is better if I don't know the answer right now, not when I'm feeling so confused.
So, instead of opening the seal, I leave the envelope on my vanity while I finish getting dressed for my night out with Jake. He's been planning this dinner for a week or more. I don't know what's so important that he would put this much thought into the evening or why I need to dress nice. Our anniversary was months ago, but whatever he needs to tell me has to be big. We are driving out of town to some fancy shmancy place that requires a reservation. Since it's such a big deal, I decide to take some time with my face, applying an extra coat of mascara and lip stick.
There's a knock at the front door, and I hear mom answer it, welcoming Jake into the house. Crap, I'm late, really, really late. Running back into my closet, I grab a cardigan to go over my sweater dress. It seems like overkill, but I know that it is frigid outside. Pulling my booties onto my feet, I fluff up my hair one more time. It'll have to work. The drizzling rain will ruin it soon enough, anyway. My coat is thrown across the foot of the bed. Picking it up, I slip my arms into it, cinching the belt at my waist.
As I snatch my lip gloss off of the vanity, applying another coat, Jake hollers up the stairs, "Red, you ready?"
"Just a sec!" I yell back.
