IT WASN’T a bad thing, mind you, Ian thought later. If not what he’d intended when he first clapped eyes on the prodigal Noah wending his way home after his long hiatus.

Then again, intentions were as easily managed as a herd of cats.

“Are you sure you can carry all that?” Ian eyed the heavy bag of sheets and towels Joshua had slung over his shoulder. “Those string handles are going to cut right through your joints.”

Joshua shook his head. “I’ve carried more. Don’t sweat it. What do I owe you for this?”

It wasn’t the first time he asked. So far, Ian had managed to dodge the question. He didn’t have any idea what sort of funds Joshua or Gabriel had, but he suspected the answer wouldn’t reach triple digits. “We’ll sort it out later when I’ve got the final tally. In the meantime just enjoy yourself, all right?”

“Me and my severed arm will try our best,” Joshua said with a crooked grin.

Gabriel’s lips quirked. Ian liked the way he looked—still as skittish as a bird with a broken wing but less apt to use his hair as a shield against the world. And he’d accepted Ian’s loan of a forest green sweater with a scoop neck. He kept his head up, and though he said little, he looked at everything.

Ian approved. Outsiders might say there was little to look at in the tiny town so far removed from city life, but Ian begged to differ. He’d fallen in love with the Outer Banks from the moment he set foot there, raw from his college years in New York.

Ian hitched up his load of canned goods. Not too heavy. “Feeling the need to head back?” he asked Joshua and Gabriel. “There’s nothing in here that’ll spoil, and I’ve been saving the best for last.”

“Thought the best was that fair-trade organic coffee for Noah,” Joshua teased.

“Oh no, my dear. Have you ever heard of Merry Lee’s ice cream? No? Neither has the rest of the world, and I’ve never been able to decide if that’s a good thing or a downright despicable crime.”

Joshua crinkled his face peculiarly at that. Did he not like ice cream? Gabriel, on the other hand, parted his lips and widened his eyes. Aha! Somebody had a sweet tooth. And if Joshua didn’t like ice cream before Merry Lee’s, he would after. Their maple cream with brown sugar-cured bacon was to die for, and the lavender-honey sherbet? Lord have mercy. Ian crooked a finger at them both. “This way.”

Gabriel and Joshua fell in step behind and beside him, willing to give it a try, and neither voiced a drop of concern about fat or calories. Winston would have had kittens at the thought. Not that a healthy lifestyle wasn’t a good thing, but if you had no room for spontaneity, for indulgence….

Well, it made you one hell of a joyless bastard. Ian huffed through his nose and nodded. Those thoughts came much more easily these days—and sleep came far more easily at night, after they’d well and truly rechristened his bed.
